Hi there!

First of all, we would like to wish you a very happy and healthy new year! 🌟

We’re sorry for having been so quiet lately (exam stress) and we have some sad news to share with you 😢

The Netherlands, where the big event will be held, is still dealing with restrictions due to the ongoing pandemic. Because of that, the EMCup organisation is forced to postpone the event from 13 and 14 February to 24 and 25 April. However, in April most of our team members will be abroad for internship projects, which unfortunately means that our school withdraws from the competition. ☹️

We were all extremely excited for this event, so we’re very heartbroken that the current situation leads to missing a grand opportunity like this one. 😢

Though we value people’s health and wellbeing even more, so we stay positive (mentally) and we would like to wish every one of the other participating teams all the best! 💪🏼

And to all of our faithful followers, thank you for having taken on this adventure with us and supporting us throughout! ♥️

Yes, there is a Smurf statue! 😍

🟥 The Smurfs were created by the Belgian comics writer and artist Pierre Culliford, better known as Peyo, his pseudonym.
🟥 Numerous sketches were made for this statue and to keep the scale of the statue in proportion to its intended size, the Smurf was placed on a mushroom.
🟥 The Smurf was given a broad smurfy smile to invite people to come into the gallery behind the statue or to come pose next to him.
🟥 The statue has a total height of 4.80 metres and next to the gallery there’s a Smurfs shop.

A very happy birthday to our team member Tijs! 🥳

‘Het Zinneke’ (Brusselian dialect for ‘the mutt’), sometimes called ‘Zinneke P*s’ by analogy with Manneken P*s.

🟥 This bronze sculpture is located in the centre of Brussels, close to our faculty building.
🟥 It was erected in 1998.
🟥 Created by Tom Frantzen, it represents a urinating dog, along the same lines as Manneken P*s and its derivative Jeanneke P*s.
🟥 This is an example of folk humour (‘zwanze’) popular in Brussels.

Do you recognize them? These are the Smurfs!

🟥 This ceiling is in the passage of the Putterie, located at the Carrefour de l’Europe, opposite the Brussels-Central station.
🟥 Belgian comics are a distinct subgroup in the comics history, and played a major role in the development of European comics, alongside France with whom they share a long common history.
🟥 While the comics in the two major language groups and regions of Belgium (Flanders with the Dutch language and Wallonia with French) each have clearly distinct characteristics, they are constantly influencing one another, and meeting each other in Brussels and in the bilingual publication tradition of the major editors.
🟥 As one of the few arts where Belgium has had an international and enduring impact in the 20th century, comics are known to be "an integral part of Belgian culture”.

If you come to Brussels, follow the 'Comic Book Route’ to see more of the Smurfs, Suske & Wiske (Spike & Suzy), Kuifje (Tintin) and much more!

No, this is not Manneken P*s, but Jeanneke P*s!

🟥 This is a half-metre-high modern fountain and statue, near the Grand Place.
🟥 She was intended to form a counterpoint to the city’s Manneken P*s.
🟥 The statue was commissioned by a businessman and owner of several restaurants in the district, and erected in 1987.
🟥 The main aim was to attract more visitors to that neighbourhood.

Did you already know there is a female version? Do you like it? 😊

Brussels is very known for its diverse culture, and how the city embraces it, can be seen throughout the city.

🟥 Brussels has citizens from all 27 Member States of the EU.
🟥 That makes this city the perfect test market.
🟥 It’s physically and politically the heart of Europe.
🟥 There are well-connected roads, airports, a modern rail infrastructure (high-speed rail network to different countries) and Europe’s second largest harbour is nearby (Antwerp).

What’s not to love? 😍

From now on, you’ll be seeing Red and the Square a lot more on our Instagram. Why?

👥 Our team colour (and 🇧🇪).
4️⃣ Corners to represent our members.
🏙 To let you see our beautiful city through our eyes.
📤 We’re thinking out of the box!

So here’s our first view: the Grand-Place in the ❤️ of Brussels.

Facts 🔎:
This square was constructed in the 12th century, and the Gothic town hall on this square was built over three phases during the 15th century.
However, the army of Louis XIV almost completely destroyed this place in 1695 by bombarding it.
Since 1998, the Grand-Place has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Extra fun fact 💡:
The tower is not perpendicular to the entrance of the town hall, due to an architect’s mistake.
