The Horizon Europe RED-SPINEL project stands for Respond to Emerging Dissensus: Supranational Instruments and Norms of European Democracy. This EU-funded research project (2023–2026) seeks to shed light on how European liberal democracy is being contested and what this means for its future in the 21st century.

To this end, RED-SPINEL developed a new analytical lens centred on the concept of dissensus over liberal democracy. In this short clip, six scholars discuss the nature of this phenomenon, its impact on European governance, and the different forms it takes across national contexts, as well as the typology of dissensus developed by the project.

For more information, please consult the special issue of European Political Science (June 2025), coordinated by R. Coman and N. Brack, entitled “Dissensus over Liberal Democracy in Europe”.

Further information on the project’s research findings is available on the project website: redspinel.iee-ulb.eu

Learning outside the classroom!

Students from the Specialised Master’s in European Law at the Institut d’études européennes (IEE-ULB) recently had the opportunity to step inside the European Commission for a firsthand look at EU law in practice.

They were privileged to meet with top-level experts from the Commission's Legal Service, who shared insights into their daily work and the complex legal challenges shaping Europe today. During the visit, they met with Alberto de Gregorio Merino, Director General of the Legal Service ; Fernando Castillo de la Torre, Director and Principal Legal Adviser, Legal Service (Competition and Mergers) and Carlo Zadra, Principal Legal Adviser, Justice, Liberty and Security (JLS) Team.

Hearing from such practitioners bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world impact, an essential part of the IEE experience for our students.

🙏 A special thanks to our professors, Martin Martinez and Julio Baquero Cruz, for organizing this visit and providing them with this great opportunity!

“The Union’s External Borders and Fundamental Rights”
🕠 5:30 – 7:00 PM

In preparation of the next FIDE Congress (to be held from 19 to 22 May 2027 in Helsinki), BEDER, in collaboration with the IEE-ULB, is organising an event to present the draft Belgian report on the topic « The Union’s External Borders and Fundamental Rights ». The issue is closely intertwined with European and national debates surrounding migration, with heightened tensions surrounding the respect of judicial decisions rendered by the Belgian Constitutional Court or the ECHR. The topic also touches upon the ways countries are preparing for the full implementation of the EU New Pact on Migration and Asylum, which aims to streamline migration policies and establish new governance structures.

👩‍⚖️ Speakers:
Joyce De Coninck (UGent)
Eleonora Frasca (UCLouvain)
Ruben Wissing(UGent)
Thomas Verellen (Utrecht)
Chloé Brière (ULB)
