Gisteren was er weer een geslaagde voorjaarbijeenkomst van de Diestse Studiekring voor Numismatiek. Huguette Taymans gaf een lezing over de penningen van de haven van Gent en het kanaal Gent Terneuzen en de nieuwe sluis, en Clive Stannard gaf een lezing over de "Non-state coinages and the trade networks of Minturnae and Pompeii in the second and first centuries BC". De erepenningen 2026 voor hun verdiensten aan de numismatiek en hun steun aan het verenigingsleven werden dit jaar uitgereikt aan Herman Gerritsen en Fabrice Lefèvre. Eveneens werd het vierdelig werk van Koen De Wolf over de Tesserae voorgesteld en het huldeboek "Liber Amicorum Harry Dewit". De bijeenkomst werd afgesloten met een ledenveiling en een diner in het hotel-restaurant De Modern. Zaterdag 5 september 2026 zal de volgende bijeenkomst van de Studiekring doorgaan.

Yesterday saw another successful spring meeting of the Numismatic Society of Diest. Huguette Taymans gave a lecture on the medals of the Port of Ghent, the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal, and the new floodgate, and Clive Stannard gave a lecture on the "Non-state coinages and the trade networks of Minturnae and Pompeii in the second and first centuries BC". The 2026 honorary medals were awarded this year to Herman Gerritsen and Fabrice Lefèvre. Also presented were Koen De Wolf's four-volume work on the Tesserae and the tribute book "Liber Amicorum Harry Dewit". The meeting concluded with a members' auction and a dinner at the hotel-restaurant De Modern. The next meeting of the Society will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2026.

Recently, our student Eden Dijkstra submitted a research paper to the R***e belge de Numismatique et de Sigillographie: http://numisbel.be/inhoudstafel.htm
Eden’s paper proved very impressive, and has been accepted to be a part of the 2025 edition!

Eden followed one of our courses on material culture in ancient religion. This course, taught by Dr Matuszewski, inspired Eden to write a paper on the ‘object biography’ of a gemstone. This object biography traces the lifecycle of a magical haematite gemstone and applies different levels of interpretation to it. Eden highlights how all imagery on the gemstone is connected through its purpose: to repel stomach aches! Finally, Eden concludes that the distinction between letters and images is not so clear-cut as is thought and that these engraved gemstones guide us in asking critical questions about antiquity and ancient religion.
After encouragement from Dr Claes, Eden submitted his paper to the R***e belge de Numismatique et de Sigillographie, with a splendid publication as a result. We would like to take this chance to congratulate Eden on this impressive feat and remind our students that the inspirations and research from our courses can often be taken a step further when one dares to take a chance!
