Join us on the 23th of August for a lecture by Günther Vogt during the summer school.

Günther Vogt is a Swiss landscape architect, founder of Vogt Landscape Architects (www.vogt-la.com) and Professor in Landscape Architecture (ETH Zurich). In his work, plants have always been a central subject and loci of experimentation.

“Forests and trees are part of our cultural history and, as such, are emotionally laden concepts. They evoke images in our minds that are not necessarily based on our everyday experience. The world of our imagination is composed of a diverse range of influences, images and metaphors originating from centuries during which people and trees lived together – and the image of the tree that is anchored in our minds is one that extends far beyond the plant itself, just as the rose in Gertrude Stein’s poem stands for more than a mere flower.”

“{…} in apparently natural forests and in cities we are now finding an international plant community that has been brought together by people. It is a plant community that has been cultivated and nurtured in tree nurseries and thus one made up of plants that have undergone a process of ‘socialization’ and have been adapted to human needs – whether we are talking about trees pruned for a role as roadside sentinels, columned forms suited to cramped spaces, miniature fruit trees for balconies, or bonsais for window sills. This has also changed our understanding of the concepts of forests and tree.”

(from ‘A tree is a tree is a tree’, Foreword in: ‘Tree Nurseries – Cultivating the Urban Jungle’ (Dominique Ghiggi, 2010)

Book project: Reports on plant production Based on reports, the background and sphere of influence of tree nurseries will be told and depicted. The relationship between people and environment will be examined from the perspective of plant production. In the foreground is the story of the various con...

Are you a creative designer (architect, urban designer or landscape architect), do you want to learn more about how to intertwine trees and forests within the built-up fabric of an urbanized territory and develop new spatial concepts and strategies for this together with a multidisciplinary group of designers, ecologists and forest engineers, with input and supervision from (international) experts ...

then the Treescape summer school might be something for you! The deadline for submission has been extended to June 5, 2021.

The aim of the Treescape design summer school is to explore and test new spatial systems, strategies and concepts to intertwine more trees and forests within the fabric of urbanized territories. Because worldwide, (sub)urbanized regions are looking for strategies to plant more urban trees and forests in order to enlarge the tree canopy cover. The spatial focus of the summer school will be on the interfaces where urban trees and forests meet up and interact with for example housing/working/food production/mobility, where synergies can arise but ‘frictions’ as well. Within the design approach, the emphasis will be on landscape-architectural and social-ecological aspects. Various lectures and supervision from (inter)national experts are planned, but are yet to be confirmed. If possible, invited local experts and stakeholders will give punctual input and feedback.

We welcome young and enthusiastic master students, recent graduates and young researchers in the fields of Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Design or Urban Planning, and Forestry to participate in the Treescape design summer school.

The extended deadline to submit applications is June 5, 2021 via an e-mail to [email protected]. Candidates are invited to send their CV and a motivation letter (maximum 300 words in English) with maximum 3 images of own projects (150 dpi).

Alan Simson has confirmed his participation in the Treescape summer school!

Alan Simson is Emeritus Professor of Landscape Architecture and Urban Forestry at Leeds Beckett University. He will give a lecture on 25 August and afterwards supervise the design process for a day.
