📢 Dear followers,
We are excited to announce the Ghent Institute for International and European Studies (GIES)!
This newly established research group is the result of a merger between CEUS and the GIIS-Ghent Institute for International Studies, as agreed by the professorial staff of the two groups at the end of 2020.
🎉 On September 15, this decision officially entered into force, as we held the first Council meeting of the new research group! We also celebrated the merger with a team-building activity and drinks among new colleagues.
🌍 GIES will build a research profile that encompasses six interrelated research themes: (1) political economy, (2) climate-energy-environment, (3) development, (4) geopolitics and strategy, (5) (inter)regionalism and (6) governance.
🇪🇺 Given the extensive focus on the EU among our researchers, the EU will take up a transversal place within GIES’ thematic profile.

We welcome you all to follow our new official page on Facebook: Ghent Institute for International and European Studies - GIES
This GIIS page will not keep up with the current goings-on of the research group anymore, so follow this page or find us on Twitter https://twitter.com/GIESGhent to stay up to date with our activities!

👁️ Also, check out our brand new website! https://www.ugent.be/ps/politiekewetenschappen/gies/en

We look forward to sharing new content and research updates with all of you!
Yours truly,
💚 The GIES' Social Media team

We are hiring a new PhD student to conduct research on “The energy security implications of large-scale imports of sustainable fuels such as hydrogen and derivatives in Belgium.”

This Ph.D. position is part of the Energy Transition Fund project BE-HyFE which aims to establish a core group of 16 broadly trained and highly networked early-stage researchers who can support the Belgian industry in finding both technological and societal solutions to essential hydrogen challenges.

The research will be hosted at the Department of Political Sciences, Ghent University. The PhD student will work under the supervision of Prof. Thijs Van de Graaf (Ghent University) and co-supervision of Prof. Ronnie Belmans (KU Leuven).

Sounds interesting to you? Find out how to apply! https://www.ugent.be/en/work/scientific/phd-student-89.

⚡️ SAVE THE DATE

On Thursday 18 March, join us for the online roundable "Navalny and beyond: Assessing the protests in Russia".

The recent arrest and conviction of Russian opposition leader Aleksei Navalny has ignited a heated debate about the political future of Russia. Navalny’s cunning use of social media and the wave of protests that has emerged in the wake of his arrest have raised questions about the sustainability of Putin’s reign. This roundtable event will critically address these questions by offering insights into the movement around Navalny and assessing to what extent the recent protests are a reflection of wider societal discontent rather than direct support for Navalny. Also the implications for Russia’s political future will be discussed, along with the role of traditional and digital media. As Russia’s relations with the European Union have further deterioritated over the poisining and arrest of Navalny, the discussion will also focus on the question what the EU should do.

Registration is required 👇https://webappsx.ugent.be/eventManager/events/RoundtableRussia

The event is organised by the Russia Platform UGent.

Moniek de Jong on German support for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline following the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Will Germany stop supporting the project?

The calls for Germany, specifically Chancellor Angela Merkel, to withdraw its support for Nord Stream 2 have increased following the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny with the nerve agent Novichok.
