Name: Zoë Detrez
Year of graduation: 2016

In 2021, Zoë Detrez launched her eponymous brand, creating pieces that resist time and trends through a strong focus on form and function. Her practice is defined by the use of powerful materials, simple shapes, and minimal interventions. This approach results in high-quality, handmade objects designed for long-term use, where seamless craftsmanship reflects a seasonless, genderless, and size-less design ethos.

This week, Zoë Detrez participates in “Tussenvormen” during Kunstennacht Hasselt, together with Marianne Winten and PXL-MAD lecturers Ilse van Roy and Ellen Vrijsen. The exhibition takes place at Marianne’s studio on Thursday, May 7.

💎 MAD JEWELS @ Modemuseum Hasselt — Kunstennacht

For one night, the Object & Jewellery department (PXL-MAD School of Arts) takes over the Fashion Museum Hasselt with multiples by makers from different generations. The repetitive and serial character brings together diverse concepts into a collective presentation of contemporary jewellery. Bodies carry, move, and repeat the jewellery throughout the space.

THURSDAY TALKS with KARIN SEUFERT

Join us next week for a lecture by Karin Seufert on Wednesday, followed by the opening of her solo exhibition on Thursday .gallery in Hasselt.

Karin Seufert lives and works in Berlin (DE) and Gothenburg (SE). Her practice revolves around the exploration of unconventional materials within the context of jewellery, materials that challenge traditional values and expectations.

For several years, she has been working primarily with PVC. Through a meticulous and time-intensive process based on repetition and dot structures, her work makes time visible and tangible, resulting in pieces that balance technical precision with a meditative quality.

In her doctoral research project 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐉𝐞𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐲, Liesbet Bussche rethinks contemporary jewellery as a process-oriented and experiential practice in the context of the material turn. She investigates how materials and the material world are noticed, shaped, processed and experienced through walking, making and writing. These methods both reframe the relationship between humans and nonhumans and acknowledge the role of the situated, subjective researcher. By tracing and activating the transformations of shells, bricks, natural stone, metal artefacts and dust, Bussche interrogates entrenched narratives in contemporary jewellery, such as the primacy of the finished object, and articulates a contribution to the discipline’s discourse.

Name: Pia David
Year of graduation: 2018

Pia David is the Senior Design and Manufacturing Lead at Kimai, where she orchestrates the design journey from initial sketch to final production. Utilizing digital tools like Procreate, she conceptualizes precise, contemporary pieces before directing their transformation into reality in collaboration with the in-house production team and atelier. Having moved beyond independent practice, Pia now focuses her expertise on guiding Kimai’s design direction, ensuring every piece reflects the brand’s signature blend of heritage and innovation.

Jessica Warch and Sidney Neuhaus founded Kimai in 2019 to modernize their shared Antwerp diamond heritage. They create fine jewelry centering Lab grown diamonds, with a strict focus on sustainability and traceability. Their collections range from personalized everyday essentials to bespoke engagement rings.

On 23 April, we welcome three alumni, Pia David, Juan Harnie and Margot Declerck, who each carved out their own path within the field.

During this evening, they will share their experiences, insights, and practical advice on building a sustainable career in jewellery and beyond.

These talks are part of the course Business & Entrepreneurship (3rd Bachelor), but are open to all students and anyone interested in life after graduation.

🗑️ MAD ON SITE

BODY ORNAMENT — FROM WASTE TO PRESENCE

Yesterday, Object & Jewellery (PXL-MAD School of Arts) took part in International Zero Waste Day, organised by PXL Green & Tech & Makerspace at Campus Diepenbeek.

Within this context, our first-year Bachelor students presented Body Ornament - From Waste to Presence.

Starting from PMD waste materials, students did not simply reuse what was discarded, they deconstructed, questioned, and radically transformed it. Through systematic experimentation, manipulation, deformation, surface treatments, and joining techniques, the material shifted from the banal to the meaningful.

The body ornaments move between element and body, between structure and character. They still carry traces of their origin, yet simultaneously leave them behind. What emerges is not reuse in a functional sense, but a shift in status.
