MAD ON SITE

Our postdoctoral researcher and lecturer is currently undertaking a four-week artist residency at Sagarmatha Next in Nepal.

Located along the trail to Mount Everest in the Nepalese Himalayas, Sagarmatha Next is a visitor centre showcasing innovative approaches to upcycling and recycling.

During her residency, Maria explores plastic waste as a source material for jewellery objects, investigating its potential through material research and artistic experimentation.

A day in Antwerp with our 1BA Object & Jewellery students, as part of the course History of Jewellery.

From visiting the shops of PXL-MAD alumni Nérée De Visser(Nérée Jewellery) and Mass Lee (Mass Lee) , founded by Josefine Mass (International Coordinator at PXL-MAD) and Dabin Lee, to discovering DIVA’s research library with Charlotte Vanhoubroeck, the day was filled with inspiration.

We also visited Rings That Rock at DIVA and ended the day at the opening of Charlotte’s solo exhibition, Inspired by Queen Louise-Marie.

Charlotte Vanhoubroeck — Inspired by Queen Louise-Marie

We are proud to highlight Inspired by Queen Louise-Marie, a solo exhibition by jewellery artist and PXL-MAD alumna and lecturer Charlotte Vanhoubroeck, opening at DIVA Museum in Antwerp.

Inspired by descriptions of the jewellery once owned by Louise-Marie of Orléans, the first Queen of Belgium, Vanhoubroeck creates contemporary jewellery that is not intended to reconstruct what once existed, but to reveal the emotional world of a largely forgotten woman.

David Huycke — A Cloud That Weighs More Than the Moon

We are proud to highlight A Cloud That Weighs More Than the Moon, a solo and retrospective exhibition by David Huycke, artist, lecturer and coordinator of the Object & Jewellery departement at PXL-MAD School of Arts.

The exhibition brings together more than fifty objects, spanning over three decades of artistic practice. From early bowl sets and granulation works to recent sculptures inspired by cosmic themes, Huycke explores process, form, materiality and structure. Planets, atoms, clouds, day and night, as well as darkness, horizon, order and chaos, become starting points for sculptural works in silver, balancing between figuration and abstraction.

💎 Marie Festraets

IN CAPSULEVORM

‘How can jewellery design, by transforming medical materials, contribute to the personal and societal handling of illness?

This project originated from a childhood drawing: a pill entering the body through a ring, making everything better again. Drawn during a period when Marie’s mother was seriously ill, this image became the starting point for a broader investigation into illness, identity, and care.

By treating pill capsules with warm water, Marie developed a new raw material that remains recognisable in origin but transforms entirely in form. The resulting jewellery explores the relationship between medicine, ritual, consumption, and healing. Inspired by the way medical objects shape our perception of illness, the work seeks to shift the focus from diagnosis to personal narrative.

Through four jewellery pieces, In Capsulevorm reflects on how jewellery can offer agency, create new meanings, and provide alternative ways of relating to illness and recovery.’

💎 Rune Vervoort

RUSTRUIMTE

This project explores how patterns reveal my way of thinking as a designer. An inner creative block led me to search for a way of working that creates space for intuition, experimentation, and acceptance.

By transforming feathers and making repetitive incisions in leather, I developed a visual language centered on repetition and variation. The subtle differences within these patterns give the work its character and reflect my ongoing exploration of imperfection and the unpredictable.

At the heart of this project is the idea of an in-between space: a mental place where the critical voice fades into the background, making room for experimentation, failure, and growth. Drawing on my interest in fashion, photography, and the craftsmanship of haute couture, I envision this visual language coming to life in front of the camera, on the runway, or in an editorial setting.

ACTOS

‘Parts of old musical instruments were dismantled, treated, restored, and reworked into wearable jewellery, giving the materials a new lease of life. Hammers, valves, strings, screws, wood, felt, and mother-of-pearl no longer form a playable instrument, but a piece of jewellery that responds to an action. By turning, sliding, unfolding, and folding, a transition is created each time: a state before, during, and after the action.

The ACTOS collection explores how a piece of jewellery can evoke attention, tranquillity, and a sense of familiarity through the addition of a repetitive action by the wearer. The jewellery becomes a small ritual: an action that slows the wearer down, helps them focus, and momentarily isolates them from the hustle and bustle around them. This allows the wearer to concentrate on a subtle movement, a soft sound, or a tactile experience.’

“As a designer, I position myself between the fields of jewelry and graphic design. This is visualized through reduction and stylization. A nod to the two-dimensionality, clarity, and legibility of graphic design, and the conceptualization, wearability, and three-dimensionality of jewelry design. The use of black further reinforces this reduction and stylization by allowing forms to grasp their essence. This essence creates formal recognizability and legibility of the final work and simulates an experience between flatness and spatiality. During my bachelor’s research, I wanted to transform formal restrictions into a strength. By combining the two worlds of jewelry and graphic design, I aim to find my own visual language that never completely detaches itself from two-dimensionality.”
