Vanaf 8 mei is een van de topstukken van de KU Leuven Bibliotheken Maurits Sabbebibliotheek โ de iconische kaart van Jeruzalem uit Bernhard von Breydenbachs Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam (1486) โ te zien in BREEDBEELD. Verweven werelden van Brugge 900-1550 in BRUSK.
Dit baanbrekende werk geldt als het eerste geรฏllustreerde pelgrimsverslag naar Jeruzalem in druk.
Met gedetailleerde houtgravures, waaronder een uitvouwbaar panorama van de Heilige Stad vanaf de Olijfberg, bood het 15de-eeuwse lezers een ongeziene visuele reiservaring. Lang vรณรณr fotografie of massatoerisme bood dit boek een virtuele pelgrimstocht die lezers van Venetiรซ naar Jeruzalem meenam. Ook de allegorische frontispice toont hoe vroeg drukkers en kunstenaars experimenteerden met beeld, compositie en diepte.

Starting 8 May, one of the treasures of KU Leuven Libraries Maurits Sabbe Library โ the iconic map of Jerusalem from Bernhard von Breydenbachโs Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam (1486) โ is on view in BREEDBEELD. Verweven werelden van Brugge 900-1550 in BRUSK.
This groundbreaking work is considered the first printed, illustrated account of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
With finely detailed woodcuts, including a fold-out panorama of the Holy City seen from the Mount of Olives, it offered 15th-century readers to imagine themselves standing before the Holy City. Long before photography or mass tourism, this book functioned as a vivid armchair journey from Venice to Jerusalem. Its allegorical frontispiece also reveals early experimentation with image, composition, and depth in print.
The incunabulum reflects the international networks of travel, knowledge, and visual culture that shaped cities like Bruges.
