Leuven Centre for the Study of Islam, Culture and Society

Leuven Centre for the Study of Islam, Culture and Society This page is dedicated to the activities of Leuven Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (LCSICS) at KU Leuven in Belgium

Leuven Centre for the Study of Islam and Society (LCSICS) is based on the long-standing commitment of KU Leuven to the development of scholarship of Islam and Muslim societies as an interdisciplinary crossroad for scholars and researchers in various fields, including theology, religious studies, history, law, philosophy, philology, literature, anthropology, sociology, social and cultural psycholog

y, cultural studies, and the arts. The new center will play a leading role in the interdisciplinary and comparative study of Muslims, Muslim Societies, Muslim Communities in the diaspora, and Islam between and across the boundaries of traditional area studies programs on national and international levels. In 2016 the Leuven Interdisciplinary Islam Seminar (LIIS) has been initiated in order to develop interdisciplinary collaboration between the faculties of Theology and Religious studies, Arts and Social Sciences and to create a platform for KU Leuven scholars (and beyond) who work from close or afar on Islam and Muslim societies in the historical and contemporary world. Recently the group of Arabic and Islamic Studies at the Faculty of Arts has joined the partnership of the Netherlands Interuniversity School for Islamic Studies (NISIS). This membership is not limited to the Faculty of Arts, but will be open for all scholars interested in the study of Islam at KU Leuven. KU Leuven is the first Belgian university to take part in NISIS.

On May 28th, Welmoet Boender (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam) will give a lecture on a much-debated topic: the development of Islamic theology at Western European universities. How do public universities engage with the academic confessional study of Islam in Europe and why is this such a complicated process? What happens intellectually in this new field?

Boender’s recently published study Islamic Theology at Western European Universities. Articulating Ikhtilāf in the Netherlands, Germany, United Kingdom and Austria (Brill, 2026) systematically explores these urgent questions. While many studies primarily focus on highly politicised institutionalisation processes, Boender includes the mapping of intellectual developments by examining the academic publications produced in this field between 2010 and 2018. Consequently, the book answers an urgent question: How do Islamic theologians conceptualise and develop Islamic university theology in Europe?

In this lecture, the author will present her main research findings, after which there will be room for discussion on what these insights imply for further study and development of Islamic theology at Western European universities
