We are looking for a student developer who would like to help build and maintain the software and technical infrastructure used in our research projects. You will collaborate with researchers and developers in the lab and help build systems that are used in real research studies. This is a great opportunity for a technically curious student who enjoys building practical systems and wants to see how software is used in cutting-edge neuroscience and hearing research.

ExpORL was weer ongelofelijk goed vertegenwoordigd op het jaarlijkse congres van de Vlaamse Vereniging voor Logopedisten 🙌

• Hanne Cottyn: taaldiagnostiek bij 2- tot 5-jarigen a.d.h.v. een vernieuwde RTOS
• Hanne Falcone: de waarde van logopedie: kosteneffectiviteit in de behandeling van taalontwikkelingsstoornissen
• Maaike Vandermosten: hersenonderzoek naar een vroege detectie en interventies bij kinderen met dyslexie

Last Sunday, March 17, our team participated at the , where we hosted an interactive workshop on the multimodality of communication.

In our workshop, children learned firsthand what it feels like when communication is challenging. We challenged them to imagine being in a new land or even on a different planet, when understanding language is a barrier. How do you bridge that barrier? By speaking with our hands 🖐 and listening with our eyes 👀 !

We guided children through an eye-opening experience, showcasing that communication goes beyond words. Through the innovative use of , we demonstrated how gestures can profoundly enhance the way we connect with and understand each other.

Special thanks to the children who enthusiastically joined us on our journey!

Congratulations dr. Lauren Blockmans on your brilliant PhD defense! 👩‍🎓 In the past 5 years, Lauren investigated the interrelations between neurocognitive 🧠 , auditory 👂 , familial 👨‍👩‍👦 and environmental 🏡 factors during early reading development 📖 , together with supervisor Maaike Vandermosten and cosupervisors Pol Ghesquiere and Jan Wouters. Last week, our colleagues Lore Kerkhofs, Irina Wils, and Guy Fierens attended the 8th International Congress on Bone Conduction Hearing and Related Technologies in Denver. 🦻 🎉

Lore shared insights into how intracochlear structures respond to bone conduction stimulation, measured using OCT vibrometry. Irina shared her findings, delving into three objective measures – intracochlear pressure, promontory velocity, and ear canal pressure – to unveil the mystery of hearing sensation through bone conduction. Meanwhile, Guy shared valuable research on MRI safety in acoustic implants. Safety is our priority!

🏆 And the highlight of it all – we're proud to announce that Lore and Irina received the Student Investigator Award!
