Mahs-Maulp Urban metabolisms are under extreme pressure. Urban inequity is on the rise. Visit www.mahsmaus.be for more information

Design practice, spatial planning and urban studies more generally are in urgent need of renewed approaches, not only to tackle social exclusion, unequal distribution of resources and spatial contradictions, but also to be inspired by the multiple and (trans)cultural expressions of city-making world-wide. The MaHS and MaUSP programmes prepare participants for engagement in complex urban transforma

tions by mastering a unique array of skills to deal with the challenges our world faces today. In the course of their experience, participants will develop a broad palette of proficiencies supporting the emergence of a much-needed critical spatial practitioner. Since space is a non-renewable resource with an agency of its own, insights into the way urbanisation patterns are mapped, co-produced and (re)designed are key competences the programmes will ensure. Participants will enrich their knowledge on how to use the performative capacity of existing human settlements and ecologies as the starting point for innovative and sustainable interplays of urbanisation, landscape and infrastructure. The Postgraduate programs Masters of Human Settlements (MaHS) and Master of Urbanism and Strategic Planning (MaUSP) are part of the KULeuven Department of Architecture, Belgium.

In her new roles, she will focus on affordable housing and on strengthening the role of public space as a core component of architecture and neighbourhood development.

As we reach the end of 2025, we’re excited to share some wonderful news from our alumnus: Supanut Udomsilaparsup (MaULP 2024), is one of the winners of the KU Leuven Future Proef Awards and will be advancing to the Flemish round 🎊🎊🎊

His thesis, “Reconfiguring ‘Wet Ideology’: Vernacular Adaptation and Modern Engineering along the Mun River, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand”, under the supervision of prof. dr. Kelly Shannon, explores a new urbanism approach for a floodplain city increasingly at risk due to climate change and hard embankment structures. By integrating vernacular wisdom with modern engineering, Supanut proposes a water-based urbanism that reframes flooding from a disaster into an adaptive opportunity to live with water, while reactivating the vital relationship between water, land, and people.

We warmly congratulate Supanut on this well-deserved recognition. We’re incredibly proud to see MaULP research contributing to climate-resilient urban futures 🌱
