As we move into the final day of the conference, we can look forward to a morning of geophysics, human-environment interactions, and the first colour and culture session.

After another full day of talks and posters, we enjoyed an excellent conference dinner at the Faculty Club. This was a brilliant networking opportunity, and the relaxing environment and beautiful surrounds made it a most enojoyable evening.

We hope everyone enjoyed this morning's sessions on bioarchaeology?

The afternoon excursions visited a variety of interesting sites of interest, and the ISA Gazette team tagged along with the Leuven city tour. It was fascinating to learn about the heritage of the city, and the history behind many of the statues found throughout the area.

For anyone particularly interested in church history and architecture, there is a Leuven churches open day on Sun 3rd June.

There is still time to sign up for the excursions tomorrow afternoon. The sign-up lists are available at the registration desk.

Today was full of interesting and informative lectures all about metals and metallurgical ceramics. This was followed by a key note talk by Mark Pollard about prosopography.

Two bids were made for the hosting of ISA 2014, and delegates now need to make the tough decision between LA and Philadelphia.

The reception celebrating 50 years of ISA was held at Provincial House, Leuven. We were treated to a series of speeches from Prof Martin Aitkin, Prof Mike Tite and Prof Yannis Maniatis. It was amusing to note that although Leuven is promoted as the 39th ISA, it is in fact only the 38th, due to the 4th ISA (1964) not actually having occurred. The word 'archaeometry' was coined in 1958 by Christopher Hawkes, and the 1st archaeometric instrument was an XRF.

Prof Mike Tite specifically toasted, past, present and future archaeometry students.

A special 50th anniversary virtual issue can be found on the Archaeometry journal website.

What a fantastic opening day to ISA 2012. The weather was glorious, the talks were really informative and everything happened with minimal hitches. The first poster session was really good and Lord Colin Renfrew gave a really interesting key note talk about the excavations and archaeometry of Keros. This was followed by a really good opening reception.

For those of you on-site at ISA, the ISA gazette has secured an exclusive interview with Lord Renfrew, so be sure to check out tomorrow's edition.

We are all looking forward to the rest of the week.
