Leuven Students Against Tuition Fees

The magazine "Veto", took 4 years to report and complain about something we have been fighting against for long. Do not believe the rector's lies, not long ago every student paid the same tuition fees, independently of the country of origin, and the increase in fees was orchestrated willingly by the faculties to squeeze more money from foreign students. Still today they continue to insult current students, saying that they want "better" students, and that making everything more expensive is the way to do it. "Better" is synonymous with "wealthier" in their dictionary.

Recently proposed changes to the admissions policy for internationals to the KU Leuven are raising concerns amongst students. They fear that wealth will determine who gets to be here.

On this day, 4 May 1929, actor and member of the Dutch resistance Audrey Hepburn was born in Belgium. Her parents, a baroness and a banker, were both fascists who personally met with Hi**er.
After her father abandoned them, she and her mother moved to the Netherlands, and her mother's views changed when N***s executed her brother, Otto van Limburg Stirum, in retaliation for resistance activities.
As a child, Hepburn studied ballet, and began to perform recitals to fundraiser for the resistance. The performances were referred to as “zwarte avonden” ("black evenings") as organisers blacked out windows while they took place so they could not be observed from outside. Hepburn described how "Guards were posted outside" to warn of approaching Germans, and how audiences "made not a single sound at the end of [her] performance."
Hepburn was part of the resistance cell of Dr. Hendrik Visser’t Hooft, which according to his daughters he proudly recalled to them. Hepburn would help deliver copies of his underground anti-fascist newspaper as a courier: “I stuffed them in my woolen socks in my wooden shoes, got on my bike and delivered them," she later recounted.
As an English speaker, Hepburn also relayed messages between downed British pilots and the resistance, and according to her son her family sheltered a British pilot who had been shot down.

We are very glad to have you here! Welcome to our beautiful University! Soon you will discover the wonders that it contains, such as its magnificent libraries, its splendid installations, its avant-garde research, its didactic lessons, its multifarious international student body... All these marvels combined will provide you an enhancing and constructive experience that shall improve your lives in many beneficial ways that you might not even foresee now.

We consider that this paramount experience should be attainable by everyone, regardless of nationalities or financial circumstances, therefore we are requesting the faculties to revert the tuition fees’ increase that they have recently done, so we can keep the affordability, the broad positive social impact, and the international diversity of our University.

These are the members of the KU Leuven Association that have increased their tuition fees for non European students, up to 7 times the regular fee (up to 603%): KU Leuven (up to 6000€), LUCA School of Arts (6597€), Thomas More (6100€), VIVES (4999€).

Only UCLL and Odisee have not increased their tuition fees: "We value every UCLL student and do not want to discriminate based on the student's background, nationality, age, ... That is why we apply the same tuition fee rate for all students".

The other universities have decided to give a different treatment to the non-EEA students.
