Great start of 2023! Report by Dr. Axel Marx and Charline Depoorter with team for UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development) on "Voluntary Sustainability Standards in International Trade" has been published today.
The report explores the role of Voluntary Sustainability Standards (VSS) in making international trade more sustainable. It provides background information on what VSS are and how they work, takes stock of the current evidence on the sustainability impacts of VSS, and analyses the integration of VSS in public policy.

Did the great trade liberalization of the late-twentieth century come at the expense of labour rights?

Tomorrow (8/12) the Global Governance and the European Union - GLOBE webinar series is joined by Adam Dean (The George Washington University) to discuss his new book 'Opening Up by Cracking Down: Labor Repression and Trade Liberalization in Democratic Developing Countries’, which demonstrates that democratic developing countries frequently turned to labour repression in order to open their economies.

GGS’ own Axel Marx will serve as discussant and Kari Otteburn will moderate.

Last week Charline Depoorter was kindly invited to present her and Dr. Axel Marx's paper "Seeing the Trees for the Forest: Adoption Dynamics of the Forest Stewardship Council" at the FSC General Assembly 2022 in Bali, Indonesia.
The session provided key insights from political sciences research on how we can conceptualise and improve sustainable forest management globally. In particular, the session fostered interesting discussions on the role of governments in engaging with private forest management instruments and the synergies between public and private regulatory tools, as well as on the promotion of landscape approaches for forest preservation.
