Historical moment last sunday, Mai 31 , in Mechelen Cathedral (BE): Prof. em. Chris Dubois - the last living full student of Flor Peeters - telling about Flor peeters as an organist, professor, composer, friend, and much more, with Peter Pieters (student of Chris Dubois and successor of Flor Peeters as the Cathedral Organist), prof. dr. Luc Ponet (student of Chris Dubois and prof for Organ at Leuven University - LUCA School of Arts, the former Lemmens Institute), prof. dr. Kristin Van den Buys (senior researcher and prof. music theory at Brussels University VUB - Royal Conservatory) and prof. dr. Mario Nell (associate prof. Stellenbosch University - South Africa). Lots of interesting information for a symposium in Stellenbosch next september and the preparation of a doctoral research project ‘the Flor Peeters legacy in the 21th century’ by researchers of Stellenbosch University.

Advice for all students:

Knowing what to practice is not enough. You must know how to practice.

Many students spend hours on their instrument but still see little progress. Why?

Because time is not the same as effective practice.

You may know the scales, the pieces, the exercises… but if the method is wrong, the result will be weak.

Here is what “knowing how to practice” really means:

1. Break it down
Do not play everything from beginning to end all the time. Isolate difficult sections and work on them deliberately.

2. Slow practice
Speed hides mistakes. Slow practice exposes them and helps you correct them properly.

3. Set clear goals
Do not just “play.” Decide what you are fixing — rhythm, fi*****ng, tone, dynamics.

4. Use repetition wisely
Repeating mistakes only strengthens them. Repeat correctly, not blindly.

5. Listen critically
Record yourself. What you think you played is not always what you actually played.

6. Hands separate (for instrumentalists)
Especially for organ, piano and keyboard players — train each hand independently before combining.

7. Rest and reset
Continuous playing without thinking leads to fatigue, not improvement. Short, focused sessions are more effective.

8. Apply corrections immediately
Do not postpone fixing errors. Address them the moment they are noticed.

The difference between an average student and a progressing one is not effort alone — it is method.

Because in music:

Bad practice strengthens mistakes.
Good practice builds mastery.

Learn how to practice, and your growth will become intentional, not accidental.

Orgels in Leuven!
