✨️ One of the highlights of this semester at MODERNITAS is just around the corner.

💡Already next week, we are looking forward to the workshop Margins of Modernity: Networks, Transfers and Mediators, organised by our colleagues Elizaveta Berquin, Eve Filée, and Sybil Raysz within the framework of the ARC project The Artist, The Scientist, and The Industrialist.

Bringing together scholars from different disciplines, the workshop explores the margins of modernity through questions of cultural transfer, mediation, social and geographical peripheries, and overlooked figures and genres that shaped modernist culture across Europe. The programme addresses topics ranging from transnational networks and intellectual exchange to women mediators, periodical culture, children’s literature, applied arts, and other forms often left outside dominant narratives of modernism.

🗓 We look forward to seeing you on Thursday June 4 to Friday June 5, from 9am, at Salle de réception, Maison des Sciences Humaines

🎧 Podcast Les Grands Petits Belges

A new episode of the podcast Les Grands Petits Belges was released a few days ago, and this time it introduces the remarkable figure of Jeanne de Tallenay, a writer and host of an exceptional literary salon in Brussels.

✨️ To explore the life of this unique personality, who managed to combine family life, literary and social ambitions, and an interest in magic and occultism, Eve Filée speaks with Stéphanie Peel. Stéphanie’s research focuses on the influence of esoteric movements on women’s position in society and their desire for literary expression. You can follow her work on Instagram at .

📌 We warmly invite you to join us for the lecture "Suburbs for a New Society: Garden City Ideals in Interwar Czechoslovakia" by Vendula Hnídková.

Her talk explores how Ebenezer Howard’s garden city concept was received and transformed in the Czech lands between 1900 and 1938. Far from being merely an imported planning model, the garden city became closely linked to the political and social ambitions of the newly founded Czechoslovakia. Drawing on projects such as Ořechovka, Zlín, and the unrealized “Masaryk City,” the lecture examines how architecture and urban planning became spaces for imagining new forms of society in post-imperial Central Europe.

🗓 We look forward to welcoming you on Tuesday, May 26, at 3:00 pm in the Reception Room, Maison des Sciences Humaines ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles
