The International Master of Science in Fire Safety Engineering (IMFSE) is a 2-year educational programme in the Erasmus+ framework

IMFSE is commonly organized by Ghent University, (Belgium, coordinator) Lund University (Sweden), and the University of Edinburgh (United Kingdom). The programme started for the first time in September 2010. The initiative is carried by professor Bart Merci (Ghent University), professor Patrick van Hees(Lund University) and professor Luke Bisby (The University of Edinburgh). IMFSE also has three renowned Associated Partners: The University of Maryland (USA), The University of Queensland (Australia) and ETH Zürich (Switzerland). With annual financial contributions from our 7 sponsors, it has been made possible to create the IMFSE Sponsorship Consortium, which awards IMFSE students with full or partial scholarships. Many of you are contacting us to ask how you can apply or what requirements you must fulfill to join the next cohort of Fire Safety Engineering students. To find out, just visit our website: www.imfse.be!

There's info on who can apply, how to apply, what documents you will need, deadlines, funding and finances and much more. Be sure to check out the Frequently Asked Questions as well!

Prepare your file well, so you can submit an application as complete as possible when the portal opens in October.

Remember to join us for the IMFSE Online Thesis Event 2026!
Wednesday 16 September, starting at 14.30 CEST.

Graduates from the Class of 2026 will be presenting short videos of their thesis work, completed at Ghent, Lund, Edinburgh, UPC Barcelona or one of our associated partner universities.

This event is the ideal introduction into what FSE research is all about.
For anyone considering the IMFSE programme, starting as an FSE student or for companies looking for talent!

Awards, awards, awards!

Once again, IMFSE is proud to recognise friends, colleagues and alumni among the awards bestowed by the SFPE Society!

This time we congratulate Simón Santamaria from Stantec for the receival of the Spotlight Award, Arnaud Trouvé from the University of Maryland on becoming an SFPE Fellow and our very own Patrick van Hees from Lund University on earning the much deserved award in recognition of his professional career!

IMFSE ONLINE THESIS EVENT ON 16 SEPTEMBER!

Each year, we ask our graduating students to present their thesis research at the annual Celebration Day in July. For those who couldn't be there, we're organising another session of thesis presentations, this time online!

Each student from the Class of 2026 will send in a short presentation. We will play these presentations 4 or 5 at a time with short Q&A intervals.

IMFSE Alumna of the Class of 2024, Maria Binte Mannan has been awarded the SFPE Student Scholar Award!

This prize recognizes outstanding students for their research to advance the science and practice of Fire Safety Engineering. Maria is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Maryland.

The Howard W. Emmons Invited Plenary Lectureship is a prestigious recognition of life-long contributions to fire science and engineering. For 2026, this career achievements award was given to our very own programme director.

Congratulations to the IMFSE Class of 2026!

Last Friday, we celebrated the succesful completion of the IMFSE programme by another 27 brand new Fire Safety Engineers!

We've had an very warm day - both literally and figuratively - filled with happy reunions, presentation jitters, chatty coffee breaks, many congratulations, and even more thank-yous!

A well meant 'thank you' from our side as well to all the students of this cohort; you've shown great enthusiasm, dedication, commitment and care toward your studies ánd your fellow students.

We wish you all the best of luck!

On Friday 26 June 2026, we will celebrate the students graduating from the IMFSE programme in 2026!

After two years of hard studying, frequent travelling and - hopefully - a lot of fun, we’ll send our students off to new adventures. Friends and family of the students are off course invited, but so is anyone who would like to find out more about IMFSE and what our programme is all about.

The event will be held at the lovely Industry Museum in Ghent (Belgium).

The deadline for applying as a self-funded VISA student is approaching!!!

Students who require a VISA and are prepared and able to fund the costs of joining this 2 year programme can apply until 31 March.

If you want to become a Fire Safety Engineer, submit your file via the OASIS platform BEFORE 1 April!
