Mr A***n Budkuley, a MED 5 student, recently completed a four-week summer research programme in pulmonology at the Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi.

Mr A***n contributed to a study conducted by the Pulmonology Institute investigating the genetic basis of Group 1 Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension (PAH) among South Asian patients, aiming to identify genetic mutations and improve understanding of disease patterns.

Guided by Dr Khaled Saleh, he gained valuable insight into PAH, developed skills in interpreting medical test results and supported data collection and analysis. The experience strengthened his ability to work with large datasets and provided valuable exposure to clinical research.

Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, received the institutional accreditation certificate and academic programme accreditation certificates of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain’s programmes from His Excellency Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Higher Education Council at a ceremony held yesterday recognising 10 education institutions and 93 academic programmes meeting the standards of the Higher Education Council in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This acknowledgement reflects our continued commitment to maintaining high standards of academic excellence and contributing to the development of higher education in Bahrain.

The ceremony also marked the launch of Bahrain’s Higher Education and Scientific Research Strategy 2026–2036, developed in partnership with the Times Higher Education (THE). The new strategy sets an ambitious national roadmap focused on educational excellence, research and innovation, international partnerships, digital transformation, and future skills.

We are proud of our commitment to Bahrain’s vision for a globally competitive, innovative, and future-ready higher education sector and we look forward to making a valuable contribution.

Our MED 5 student, Ms Margherita Gabra set out to explore a new field with her elective in Thoracic Surgery at Guy’s Hospital in London, UK, under the guidance of Professor Andrea Billè MD, PhD, FRCS, Consultant in Thoracic Surgery at Guy's and St. Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust and Professor at King's College London.

Stepping into the operating theatre, she practised live knot-tying and suturing and discovered the technical world of robotic surgery. Ms Margherita also had the chance to participate in a simulation session at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which integrated complex medical, surgical, and interpersonal scenarios that mirrored real-life unpredictability. This experience challenged her to adapt quickly and sharpen her clinical reasoning.

Reflecting on her journey, Margherita shares, “I entered this elective out of curiosity, but it completely reshaped my career plans. Thoracic surgery is now at the top of my list for future residency and subspecialty training.

We were delighted to host the first Clinical Teaching & Learning Workshop of the 2026/2027 academic year at RCSI Medical University of Bahrain.

More than 50 Clinical Mentors from Bahrain’s healthcare sector, including RCSI Bahrain alumni, took part in the workshop. The newly trained mentors will support our Nursing Year 4 students during their Semester 1 clinical placements.

The workshop explored practical approaches to assessing students’ clinical learning needs, providing effective feedback and supporting students in developing clinical competence. We look forward to seeing the positive impact of this training across our clinical teams.

Our SC1 student, Ms Hala AlOmar completed a four-week General Surgery elective at Leighton Hospital in the UK.

The placement offered valuable insight into multidisciplinary patient care, teamwork and continuous learning.

Ms Hala found the decision-making outside the operating theatre valuable, including how risks are explained and how the team contributes to patient plans. The experience helped her become comfortable in new environments, ask better questions and take responsibility for her own learning.

She encourages students to choose electives that challenge them, be curious, speak to people and engage fully with every opportunity.

Our MED 2 student, Mr Salman Abdulla, spent July volunteering at Errafik Association, an orphanage in Sfax, Tunisia, through AIESEC, a youth-run non-profit organisation.

During his placement, Mr Salman provided direct healthcare support to children. His responsibilities included administering prescribed medications, managing medication schedules, supporting nutritional needs and assisting with activities of daily living. He also ensured the safety and well-being of the children under his care.

“What motivated me to volunteer is my belief that healthcare should be a basic human right rather than a privilege, especially for children in need. Through this experience, I learned that compassionate, patient-focused care extends far beyond medical treatment within the walls of hospitals.”

We congratulate the Academic Excellence Association (‘Tamayouz’ Association) members on their recent meeting with His Excellency Ayman bin Tawfiq Almoayyed, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports.

The session provided valuable insights into the academic and professional experiences of the association members, their diverse specialisations and their aspirations for the future.

We are proud to celebrate Dr Alia Abdullatif (Class of 2025), a recent intern graduate from King Hamad University Hospital, who presented her research at the 2026 Annual Meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology in Chicago, the world’s largest and most influential oncology conference.

Dr Alia’s research, which investigates treatment-related toxicities in patients receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors, is an increasingly important area of study as immunotherapy continues to transform cancer treatment.

This summer, our Med 5 student, Mr Suod Al Hammad, completed an immersive elective at Imperial College London, gaining hands-on experience in General Surgery and Trauma Surgery at St Mary’s Hospital.

Mr Suod experienced the high-stakes environment of a major trauma centre, observing complex procedures, attending multidisciplinary meetings, and joining ward rounds in the Accident and Emergency department.

"This experience showed me that surgery is about more than technical skill. Witnessing the collaboration, leadership, and resilience of the teams caring for trauma patients strengthened my passion for surgery and inspired me to continue learning with purpose and compassion."
