We are delighted to announce R.W.Bro. Richard Gan, JP., P.Prov.G.M. (Middlesex), as the next Canon Portal Memorial Lecturer.
Richard will explore the remarkable life and legacy of Frederick Binckes, whose vision and service had a profound influence on Mark Masonry.
Binckes played a pivotal role in the development of the Mark Degree, the Mark Benevolent Fund and the establishment of Mark Masons’ Hall.
His wider contribution to Freemasonry and its charitable institutions was equally significant.
We look forward to welcoming Richard and to another engaging and enlightening occasion of Masonic history and fellowship.

Synopsis of the 2026 Canon Portal Memorial Lecture:

Frederick Binckes: A Remarkable Freemason - Frederick Binckes was an outstanding Victorian Freemason who had a profound and lasting effect on many different aspects of Freemasonry, and was instrumental in putting Mark Masonry on the Map. He was appointed Grand Secretary of Mark Grand Lodge in 1861, and served concurrently as Secretary of the Royal Masonic Institution for Boys for over twenty-eight years. Binckes had a considerable influence on the expansion of the Mark Degree and its acceptance into mainstream Masonry, both at home and overseas, the creation of the Mark Benevolent Fund and the establishment of Mark Masons’ Hall in Great Queen Street. He also played a key role in the Royal Ark Mariner being brought under the protection of Mark Grand Lodge, as well as the formation and early development of the Royal and Select Masters, and the Allied Masonic Degrees.

We also extend our sincere thanks and appreciation to W.Bro. Dr John Walter Hawkins for his dedication, service and scholarly contribution in delivering the previous lecture.

The Annual Meeting of the Divisional Conclave of Middlesex took place on Saturday 25th of July at the Twickenham District Masonic Centre, Twickenham, Middlesex. From 9.00 am the Worthy Knights of the Division of Middlesex and their guests started arriving for coffee and bacon butties. We received a very warm welcome from the Intendant-General, R.Ill.Kt. Dr. Silverio Ostrowski. There were many honoured guests attending to support the Division of Middlesex, including eighteen Intendant Generals from other Divisions, and Heads of other Orders in Middlesex. At 10.45 the Companions were gathered in the lovely Temple at Twickenham to receive a briefing from the Divisional Marshal. The meeting was called to order to receive the Rt. Illustrious Knights and the Divisional Officers of the year. The Worthy Knights were again called to Order to receive the Intendant-General of the Division of Middlesex, preceded by the Banner Bearer and Sword Bearer. Divisional Conclave was opened in due form, and the Intendant-General was saluted with seven under direction of the Divisional Marshal. A requiem was held in memory of those Worthy Knights who have passed to higher service. The Intendant-General then welcomed the honoured guests of the Division, and other Distinguished Worthy Knights. There was a special welcome for R.Ill.Kt. Denis Leigh, Past Intendant-General of the Division of Middlesex. After the regular business of the Division had been concluded, the Intendant-General was pleased to re-appoint P.Kt. Steven Vanhinsbergh as his Deputy Intendant-General, thanking him for all his support over the past year. The Intendant-General then appointed and invested his Officers.
The Intendant-General addressed Divisional Grand Conclave. In his address he said how honoured he felt by the support from all the guests from other divisions. He thanked all his outgoing officers for their support over the past year and offered his congratulations to the two Worth Knights who had received Grand Rank at the meeting of Grand Imperial Conclave, as well as those he had appointed and invested today, encouraging them to come out on the official visits. He said that recruitment is very important and encouraged the Worthy Knights to look at potential candidates from their Royal Arch Chapters. We need to raise awareness of our Order and talk to the Chapter Companions. He ended by thanking his Recorder and Marshall and their teams for all they did to ensure the meeting today ran so smoothly.
Divisional Grand Conclave was closed in due form and the Intendant-General retired in procession, greeting the Right Illustrious Knights, and Honoured Guests on their way out. After refreshments and a chance to meet up with old friends we were called into lunch. We had a most enjoyable lunch in good company. The toast to the Intendant-General was given in an entertaining way by the Deputy Intendant General, Ill.Kt. Steven Vanhinsbergh. In his reply the Intendant General thanked the Deputy Intendant General for his kind words. He then thanked everyone for attending to make this a very special meeting, wishing them a safe journey home.

On Saturday, 1 August 2026, the District Grand Council of West Yorkshire convened its Annual Meeting on a glorious summer’s day. The fine weather provided a fitting backdrop to what proved to be another highly successful and enjoyable occasion for the District. Companions from across West Yorkshire were joined by distinguished guests from throughout the country to support the District Grand Master, Right Illustrious Companion Fraser McPherson, as he commenced his seventh year in office. Their presence added both warmth and distinction to the proceedings. The meeting took place against a busy Masonic calendar, with several significant events being held across the north of England. As a result, a number of our regular visitors and Companions were engaged elsewhere on important duties. Even so, the Annual Meeting was exceptionally well supported, with an impressive attendance including 13 District Grand Masters, several Deputy District Grand Masters, principal officers, Recorders, and many Companions from neighbouring Districts.
This strong turnout was a clear reflection of the high esteem in which the District Grand Council of West Yorkshire is held, as well as the enduring friendships that continue to flourish throughout Cryptic Masonry. In keeping with the District’s well-established reputation for efficiency, the business of the meeting was conducted with admirable precision. All formal proceedings were completed within the hour, underscoring the organised and professional manner in which the District continues to operate.
Following the close of business, the Companions retired to the Festive Board, where they enjoyed a light and refreshing summer salad. More importantly, they shared in the warm fellowship and unique companionship that are the hallmark of Royal and Select Masters. The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, filled with the good humour that has long characterised Cryptic Masonry.
We were also delighted to welcome R.W. Bro. J. Trevor Bolton, Provincial Grand Master for the Mark in West Yorkshire, who, although not yet a member, kindly joined us at the Festive Board for the second consecutive year in a show of valued support.
With many guests facing considerable journeys home, the Festive Board concluded shortly after 2.00 pm, allowing all to depart safely while reflecting on another thoroughly enjoyable and successful Annual Meeting. Once again, the 2026 Annual Meeting demonstrated all that makes the District Grand Council of West Yorkshire such a respected and welcoming District: excellent organisation, distinguished company, genuine friendship, and outstanding Cryptic companionship. In every respect, it was Cryptic Masonry at its very best.

On **1 August 2026**, seventy-five members of the Royal & Select Masters gathered at the Masonic Hall, 6 Portland Place, Penrith, for the **reconstitution of Applegarth Council No. 30**.

Originally established in Ambleside in 1904, Applegarth Council operated until 1909, when it surrendered its warrant. Over a century later, the idea of reviving the Council was first proposed by the late District Grand Master, Norman Dunkeld Milburn, although it failed to gain momentum. His successor, Right Illustrious Companion Douglas Graham Sanderson, renewed the initiative, and following approval from the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Kessick John Jones, in 2025, a group of founders met to bring the project to fruition.

Over the following months, the founders worked together to agree the Council's fees, officers, by-laws, meeting venue and arrangements for the reconstitution and celebratory luncheon. Although the original venue in Carlisle had to be abandoned following the closure of the Masonic Hall there, Penrith was chosen as an excellent alternative because of its facilities, transport links and hospitality.

The ceremony was attended by 32 founders, 15 Grand Officers led by the Most Illustrious Grand Master, Kessick John Jones, and 28 Companions from Lancashire, Northumberland, and Cumberland & Westmorland. At 11.00 a.m., the Most Illustrious Grand Master entered the Council with his officers and presided over an impressive ceremony to reconstitute Applegarth Council No. 30. During the proceedings, Right Illustrious Companion John Harvey, District Grand Master, was installed as Thrice Illustrious Master by the Deputy Grand Master, Paul Norman, after which the Council's first officers were appointed and invested.

Following the meeting, 64 diners attended a celebratory three-course luncheon at the Roundthorn Country House Hotel on Beacon Edge. After the customary toasts, the Grand Team departed for the West Coast Main Line station to begin their journey south, several carrying generous liquid gifts presented by the founders, bringing a memorable and historic occasion to a fitting close.

St Aubyn Council No. 33 Time Immemorial witnessed a memorable and uplifting evening as Brothers Matthew Evans and Geoff Kavanagh were formally admitted into the Order of the Allied Masonic Degrees. Their double admission brought a sense of renewal and continuity to the Council, reminding all present of the living strength of our traditions.

The ceremony was conducted under the steady guidance of Worshipful Master George Bennell, who led from the front with assurance, dignity, and a deep respect for the ritual workings of the Order. His delivery provided the candidates with a clear and confident first step into their new Masonic journey.

The evening was further distinguished by the attendance of senior District leadership. R.W. Bro. Barry Slade, District Grand Prefect, honoured the Council with his presence, underscoring the significance of the occasion. Alongside him stood his newly appointed deputy, W. Bro. Richard Thomas, Deputy District Grand Prefect, whose early commitment to active engagement within the District was warmly noted.

A large number of active District Officers also attended, filling the room with fraternal support and demonstrating the unity and vitality of the Allied Masonic Degrees within the District. .

Brothers Evans and Kavanagh now embark upon their path within the Allied Masonic Degrees, guided by the virtues of service, humility, and brotherly fellowship. Their admission stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of St Aubyn Council No. 33 and to the shared commitment of all who labour within its walls.

We are pleased to announce that the Essex Division of the Red Cross of Constantine has been honoured by the Grand Sovereign with a generous £2,500 donation from his Care for Children Fund. This fund supports charities and organisations whose work is directly dedicated to the welfare and care of children.
After careful consideration, we have chosen to direct this donation to the Children’s Burns Summer Camp at the Grafham Water Centre in Perry, Cambridgeshire. The camp is organised and run entirely by unpaid volunteers who provide a week‑long holiday for children who have suffered burn injuries. It offers a safe, supportive environment where young people can meet others who truly understand their anxieties, traumas, and daily challenges.
Here, they find companionship without judgement and the opportunity to build friendships that often last a lifetime. The camp also helps children develop confidence, resilience, and coping strategies as the children come to terms with permanent scarring and unkind comments they may face from their peers. Our support for the Burns Summer Camp marks the launch of the Intendant General’s Community Support Campaign, an initiative designed to unite and strengthen the charitable efforts of all our Conclaves.
Intendant General for Essex - the Rev. Martin Howse is pictured here presenting the Grand Sovereign's cheque to David Webster, Chief Organiser of the Camp; a serving Fire Officer who has dedicated his time to helping children aged from 5 to 18 to learn how to cope with their burns and disabilities.

A small delegation of Mark Master Masons from the Fortescue Mark Lodge No. 9, which meets at South Molton in North Devon, travelled to Minehead in Somerset recently to visit one of their Honorary Members, Worshipful Brother Raymond John Organ (more commonly known as John), to celebrate his Sixty Years as a Mark Master Mason. They were led by the Worshipful Master of the Lodge, Worshipful Brother Ray McIntosh and included the Secretary, Worshipful Brother Keith Rodulson, and two good friends of John, Worshipful Brother Pete Smith and Worshipful Brother David Stanbury. They were accompanied by the Provincial Grand Secretary, Worshipful Brother Robert Palmer, who was representing the Provincial Grand Master, who was unable to attend due to other commitments.
John, who is aged 96, was Advanced into the Fortescue Lodge of Mark Master Masons No. 9 on 18 March 1966, and he held several offices within the Lodge, including serving as Secretary for several years. He was also a Founder Member of the Devonshire Lodge of Installed Mark Masters No. 1750, consecrated in September 1995. In addition, he was a member of the Fortescue Lodge No. 9 of the Ancient and Honourable Fraternity of Royal Ark Mariner. Due to his age and his difficulty in attending Lodge, he was consequently made an Honorary Member of the lodge in 2022. John continued to take an interest in the Lodge and attended on occasions when other members were able to bring him and his health allowed.
Sadly, John became severely ill recently, and he was admitted to hospital in Taunton. His condition stabilised fortunately, and he was transferred to a Residential Care Home in Minehead. This allowed his friends and colleagues to attend the home to present him with his Grand Lodge and Provincial Grand Lodge Certificates to ‘Mark’ his sixty years' membership of the Degree. The Provincial Grand Secretary read a letter out to John from the Provincial Grand Master apologising for his absence, congratulating him on his achievement, and wishing him well. Rob then showed him the Grand Lodge Certificate containing the signature of the Grand Master, and then the Provincial Grand Lodge Certificate. His close friend, Pete Smith, then handed him a Mark Token as a gift from the Province.
John was extremely appreciative that people had taken the time to visit him, and he was very grateful for the Certificates, letter, and token. The Care Home and its staff were very welcoming and supportive of the visit by the Mark Master Masons to see John, and they intend to mount the certificates on the wall in John’s room for the benefit of both John and visitors alike.
