To scare off invaders, they would paint their faces with a prehistorical shark, showing dominance and will to fight to protect their homeland.

The Thinker (Le Penseur), by Auguste Rodin, originally named The poet, is a Life-sized statue of a man resting his forehead in his hand as though in deep thought and is often used as a symble of Philosophy. Some historians also believe the statue could have been crafted as a way to refer to a drunk man, who could barely live his life after a party full of booze and late night standing.
