After falling from its nest on a power line tower, one Bald Eagle chick was brought to the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey's Raptor Trauma Clinic. It was too dangerous to return him to the nest, so the Center's team scheduled his release in an area with a large population of Bald Eagles that could act as a surrogate family as he learned to survive on his own. Now, telemetry data from this bird and others like it are providing a glimpse into the behaviors of these beloved eagles. Read more from Audubon Florida at the link in comments.

For composer and alum Hil Jaeger (Music BFA 15), revamping the sound logo for Cirque du Soleil was a “dream commercial project.”

She spent two months developing the two-minute anthem that honors Cirque’s history while merging a fresh mix of orchestra, synths, electronics, and her very own vocals. Landing the gig was a competition, of which she was the only woman to participate, and the only composer whose works were selected to move forward.

Jaeger, who chose CalArts for its pioneering music tech program, advocates for more women to pursue music production to gain technical skills and increase representation in the industry.

Researchers from Tarleton State University in Texas have discovered that plant-based extracts, particularly from okra, fenugreek, tamarind, and cactus, can significantly remove microplastics from wastewater.

Key highlights:

Okra and fenugreek mucilage (plant-based goo) work by acting as a natural coagulant.

When combined in the right ratios, they can remove up to 90% of microplastics from water.

Unlike synthetic coagulants (like polyacrylamide), these natural alternatives are non-toxic and environmentally friendly.

The study is part of an effort to find sustainable solutions to the growing problem of microplastic contamination in water bodies.

The extracts are especially effective when removing microplastics from ocean and freshwater sources.

The lead researcher, Dr. Rajani Srinivasan, emphasized that this approach could make wastewater treatment safer and more eco-friendly, especially in areas lacking access to expensive treatment technology.
