We are pleased to welcome Dr Niall Curry, UKRI Metascience AI Fellow and Reader in Languages and Linguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University (UK).

Dr Curry’s research focuses on key areas of applied linguistics, including corpus linguistics, contrastive linguistics, discourse analysis, and language pedagogy. He is Series Co-Editor of the Routledge Applied Corpus Linguistics and Routledge Corpus Linguistics Guides book series, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, and an Associate Fellow of the Global China Academy.

Dr Curry will present the talk: Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI in Applied Linguistics. This talk examines the growing role of Generative AI in corpus linguistics research. While GenAI promises new possibilities for research practices, it also raises important questions regarding its limitations and implications. Drawing on recent studies, Dr Curry discusses issues such as GenAI literacy, research ethics, and knowledge production, reflecting on how large language models may or may not align with the goals of corpus linguistics. The talk also considers contexts in which the use of GenAI may be ineffective, potentially incompatible with research agendas, or open new opportunities for linguistic research.

We are delighted to welcome Dr Gavin Brookes, Reader in Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University (UK).

Dr Brookes’ research combines corpus linguistic, critical, and multimodal approaches to examine the relationship between discourse and social life. He is Associate Editor of the International Journal of Corpus Linguistics and co-editor of the Corpus and Discourse book series (Bloomsbury) and Elements in Critical Discourse Studies (Cambridge University Press).

Dr Brookes will present the talk: Corpus Linguistics for Gender and Language Research: Key Concepts and Critical Reflections

This talk explores how corpus linguistic methods contribute to research on language and gender. Corpus approaches allow researchers to move beyond intuition-based claims and instead examine linguistic patterns across large collections of authentic language data. However, the application of corpus methods in this field also raises important methodological and theoretical challenges. Drawing on several case studies, Dr Brookes discusses issues such as operationalising gender concepts, identifying implicit discursive patterns, and addressing intersectionality in corpora not originally designed for sociolinguistic analysis. The presentation introduces key corpus linguistic techniques while encouraging critical reflection on their use in gender and language research.
