UB ALUMNI EXAMINE CHALLENGES LIMITING GRADUATES GLOBAL IMPACT

University of Botswana (UB) alumni have identified several challenges that make it hard for graduates to compete globally.

Speaking at the recent UB Alumni Symposium held at the UB Indoor Sports Centre, the alumni pointed out limited international exposure, skills gaps, weak global networks, and a mindset that discourages innovation and business creation. They also suggested practical solutions to help graduates succeed in a more connected world.

Dr. Matlhogonolo Mongwa Mouwane said UB graduates have talent and good ideas, but many do not turn these ideas into real businesses. She noted that many graduates depend on government jobs instead of creating their own opportunities and also raised concerns about poor work ethic.

She added that people have little confidence in local ideas and often prefer solutions from outside the country. This slows innovation and progress. She also said different stakeholders often work separately instead of working together as one system.

First National Bank Botswana (FNBB) Chief Information Officer, Mr. Moses MacGeoff, said local businesses face challenges in growing beyond Botswana. These include limited access to funding, strict regulations, weak partnerships, and limited access to larger markets.

He said good ideas should be supported with funding before they fail. He also encouraged more teamwork between stakeholders and advised graduates to use technology to reach regional and global markets.

Meanwhile, Collings Chilisa Consultants Managing Attorney, Mr. Mboki Mbakiso Chilisa, said a negative mindset is stopping many graduates and businesses from going global. He noted that many businesses are built only for Botswanaโ€™s small market, which makes it hard to expand. He called for a change in thinking so that students and entrepreneurs can develop ideas that can work in global markets.

TRANSFORMING LIVES THROUGH TECHNOLOGY: THE STORY OF UB ALUMNUS - Moses MacGeoff.
Chief Information Officer (CIO) | First National Bank Botswana (FNBB)

My journey in technology started at the University of Botswana (UB), where I was proud to be among the first students to study Computer Science. At that time, technology was still growing in Botswana, and few people knew how much it would change the way we live, work, and do business.

What began as an interest in computers became a lifelong career. Over the years, I have seen Botswana make great progress in technology and develop strong local talent. The University of Botswana has played an important role in this growth by producing skilled graduates who continue to drive innovation across the country.

Today, I lead Information Technology at First National Bank Botswana (FNBB). Technology is now a key part of banking, and my role allows me to help make financial services simpler, safer, and more accessible for customers.

What motivates me most is helping people gain access to financial services. Through digital banking, loans, insurance, and investment solutions, technology is making it easier for people to improve their lives. These services help individuals save money, grow businesses, and create better opportunities for themselves and their families.

Although progress has been made, many young people still do not have access to formal financial services. This challenge inspires me to work harder every day. I believe that through technology, innovation, and education, we can reach more people and help them build a better future.

A key part of this work is the strong partnership between First National Bank Botswana and the University of Botswana. Together with the Computer Science Department and UniPod, we support student training, mentorship, innovation projects, and guest lectures. We have also donated computers and other technology resources to help students prepare for successful careers.

Looking back, I am proud of how far this journey has taken me from being one of the first Computer Science students at the University of Botswana to helping lead technology transformation in Botswana's banking sector. This experience has shown me the power of education, technology, and partnerships to change lives. I remain committed to using technology and innovation to expand financial inclusion, empower communities, and contribute to Botswana's growth and development.
