Did you know? The ICA has carried its story through its flags and symbols for 100 years!

🌈 1925: The rainbow flag

French cooperator Professor Charles Gide suggested using the seven colours of the rainbow for the flag. He pointed out that the rainbow symbolised unity in diversity and the power of light, enlightenment and progress.

🕊️ 2001: A rainbow with doves of peace

The 2001 design carries the ICA logo, which was first designed for the ICA Centennial Congress in Manchester in 1995. It depicts doves of peace emerging from a rainbow, and represents the diversity of the ICA’s membership. This design was developed to more clearly promote and strengthen the cooperative image.

🌍 2013: The Coop Marque

The United Nations’ support for the first International Year of Cooperatives in 2012 galvanized the global movement across every region and every sector uniting cooperatives behind a single logo and tagline. The current version now is in plum coop marque. The ICA has also developed a global cooperative identity brand suite that all cooperatives can align with and which differentiates us from other forms of business.

Today, as we mark ICA’s 130th anniversary, these symbols remind us of our shared history as a movement.
