DNA Extraction and Barcoding Come to UB for a Second Round

The University of Belize welcomed Dr. Stokes Baker, Plant Molecular Biologist and Associate Professor at the University of Detroit Mercy. Dr. Baker joined the Faculty of Science and Technology as a Fullbright Fellow this semester to provide capacity building on DNA extraction and barcoding. While at the University of Belize, Dr. Baker will be working along with science faculty and students to complete the following projects:

1. Developing a DNA barcoding module to investigate population bacteria in plant root nodules, along with Mrs. Monica Hua and her Biochemistry Lab students.
2. Identification of the sea cucumber Holothuria floridana invertebrate and algal symbionts using DNA barcoding, along with Dr. Arlenie Rogers.
3. Identification of polychaete symbiont of Isostichopus badionotus using DNA barcoding, along with Dr. Arlenie Rogers and BSc Marine Biology thesis students Kael Wagner and Anthony Lizama.
4. DNA extraction and barcoding of shallow seagrass marine sponges, along with BSc Marine Biology thesis student Bianca Narvaez and thesis advisor Dr. Arlenie Rogers.
5. DNA extraction and barcoding of mangrove sponges, along with BSc Marine Biology student Wilbert Castillo and thesis advisor Dr. Arlenie Rogers.
6. Sea cucumber Holothuria floridana skin and intestine microbiome analysis along with Dr. Arlenie Rogers.
7. Training Science Department Faculty on DNA extraction and barcoding.
