UFV's public art course, taught by .r.friesen, unveiled 4 public arts projects in Mission last week. If you're in the city, head to 2nd Avenue and check them out!

The public art course partnered with the of Mission's Arts & Culture division to produce public arts on 2nd Avenue, including the stairs leading up to Central Elementary.

25 students were involved in the course to produce a mural, staircase art, sidewalk art, and a picnic bench. As part of the process, students had to identify the spaces they were going to use, create proposals, and then present them to a panel.

They have been working hard on the project all summer.

This year's artists include:

Adrian Andor, Lexi Brown, June Budd, Courtney Charleyboy, Jasmine Chohan, Megan Daniels, Liara de Gier, Hazel Franklin, Georgia Gibson, Adrienne Ginther, Wyatt Janzen, Sophie Kolind, Emma Larson, Mouon Levan, Savannah Miley, Art Powzun, Sam Price, Carli Rokochy, Kaia Skott-Smith, Vanessa Tran, Stephanie Unrau, Kaitlyn White, Kate Ybarra, and Kirsten Zilian Dyble.

From UFV to the world stage.

UFV students Tavia Jasper and Ava Wagner represented UFV at the 2026 UN Peace Summit in Bangkok — joining global leaders, peacebuilders, and changemakers in critical conversations on justice, sustainability, and humanitarian action.

Both students were also appointed Humanitarian Affairs Peace Ambassadors for a one-year term, recognizing their commitment to creating meaningful change locally and globally.

Their journey is a powerful reminder that leadership starts with curiosity, courage, and community — and that global impact can begin right here at UFV.

UFV French major student Cody Woelders took the stage at UBC’s Asian Centre and delivered a full speech in Japanese -- from memory.

He earned second place at the BC Japanese Speech Contest, but his story goes far beyond the award. From returning to university as an adult learner to exploring how language shapes identity and belonging, Cody’s journey highlights the power of multilingual education.
