The role of the Art Department has always been to teach StFX students the importance of visual literacy in society. This has been so since drawing & painting were first taught in the 1890s. Over the past 125 years art & art history courses have been integral to a quality education for StFX students, regardless of discipline. In fact, drawing was mandatory for all BAs in the early 20th C, and throu
ghout the 1960s every BA or BA Major was required to take an art history survey course in their senior year. The Art Department has grown from the first two studio courses, and currently offers over 35 courses in both Studio Art & Art History; three additional courses in Art History are cross-listed with other departments. This growth has allowed the department to offer students the option of a Pair or Minor in Studio Art; Art History offers a Pair, a Minor and a Subsidiary. Students come to the Art Department from all faculties and schools at StFX. Studio courses teach students how images are made; art history courses teach students the important meaning of those images. Students discover the benefits of creative thinking in the studio, & art history allows them to understand the powerful message in artworks situated within their historical, political, and social context. These concepts - art production and its meaning - actively engage students in the practice and theory of visual literacy: a knowledge that is now fundamental to a fast-developing international creative economy. The Art Department is poised to help StFX students prepare for their successful future.
