Thinking like researchers, building confidence, and tackling real-world problems are just some of the benefits three StFX students gained through summer research internships. Scarlett Evans, Ella MacPhee, and Carter Burton each received a $9,000 Cunningham Internship to conduct undergraduate research under the supervision of StFX faculty.

For 60 years, StFX’s X-Project has worked alongside African Nova Scotian and Mi’kmaw communities to bring StFX students and local youth together through tutoring, mentorship, and community activities. Along the way, the program has made a lasting impact on generations of young people, families, and student volunteers.

Tiny pest, big problem. StFX MSc biology student Mélina Chicoine has received the $3,500 Frances Elizabeth Hilder Scholarship for her research into protecting Nova Scotia’s beech trees from a destructive weevil.

“The goal is straightforward,” says Dr. Risk. “If we can improve the tools used to detect and measure methane, we can help industry and regulators actually reduce it. That is the whole point.”

StFX’s FluxLab has established SIMFLEX-BASE, a new methane research facility near Oxford, Nova Scotia. Led by Dr. Dave Risk, the facility will test and improve methane detection technologies while giving StFX students hands-on experience in environmental research.

A message from StFX President and Vice-Chancellor,
Dr. Andy Hakin:

Perpetuation of R**e Culture will not be tolerated at StFX

The sign displayed at an off-campus house during Homecoming was degrading and deeply concerning. Language that objectifies women or makes light of sexualized violence has no place at StFX or in any community. We understand the concern and anger this has caused, both within our own community and beyond it. StFX unequivocally rejects misogyny, sexualized and gender-based violence, and the attitudes and behaviours that contribute to r**e culture.

The University intervened to have the sign removed. When it was reposted, we took further action to ensure it was taken down again. The matter has been referred through the University’s disciplinary process. Preventing further harm was an important part of our response.

Every member of our community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We all have a responsibility to challenge behaviour that diminishes others, normalizes sexualized violence, or undermines the safety and belonging of members of our community.

StFX will continue its work to prevent sexualized and gender-based violence, support those who are affected by it, and build a community in which respect, consent, and care for one another are expected. Our Sexual Violence Response Policy provides a framework for how we respond to and address sexualized violence, and we will continue to use this policy to inform and guide our actions. Anyone who has been affected by sexualized violence can access support through Visible@X and additional student supports are also available through Student Services.

I also want to acknowledge the staff, faculty and student leaders across StFX who continue to support members of our community, respond to concerns, and advance this important work.

Yesterday, the StFX Hall of Honour welcomed four new inductees: Dr. Carolyn Rideout ’67, Garry Madeiros ’71, Maria van Vonderen ’94, and the late Andrew Harvey ’05 ’20.

The Hall of Honour recognizes members of the StFX community who carry forward the Xaverian tradition of helping others and strengthening their communities.

An important message from Elizabeth Yeo, Vice-President, Student Life:

As we celebrate Homecoming and welcome alumni and friends back to campus, we have been made aware of an offensive sign that was hung from an off-campus house within town. We are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident and will take appropriate action with those involved.

While Homecoming is a time for celebration, school spirit and friendly rivalry, there are clear boundaries around what is acceptable. Conduct that demeans, objectifies or disrespects others has no place in the StFX community.

Even when off-campus, acts such as this—or any other offensive or inappropriate acts—will not be tolerated. We expect all members of our community to uphold the values of respect, dignity and care for others, during Homecoming and throughout the year.

Where students are identified as having violated the StFX Code of Conduct, they will be held accountable for their actions and subject to the University's disciplinary process.

We take this very seriously. If you experience or witness inappropriate or offensive behaviour, or have concerns about conduct within our community, please bring it to our attention by contacting [email protected].

We can celebrate our community and our rivalries without losing sight of the standards we expect of one another.

Today, the StFX community came together to honour Father Stanley MacDonald ’54 with the unveiling of a memorial tribute at the Saputo Centre. A beloved friend, mentor, spiritual advisor, and Athletics supporter, Father Stan’s impact will live on in generations of Xaverians. Go X Go!
