🌱 Working together towards more sustainable agriculture

On 8–9 October 2026, the Conservation and Regenerative Agriculture Workshop and Research Forum brought researchers, students and agricultural partners together at the NWU’s Living Laboratory for Sustainable Agriculture in Potchefstroom.

A collaboration between NWU, ASSET Research and the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), the programme combined practical field demonstrations, student poster presentations and research discussions. Topics ranged from soil health and conservation agriculture trials to irrigation, weather forecasts for farming and the economic viability of regenerative agriculture. 🌾

For the UESM, connecting research, practical experience and student learning is an important part of advancing sustainable agriculture.

🌦️ Passionate about artificial intelligence and weather science?

The NWU Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Applied AI for Weather Radar Nowcasting and Storm-Scale Prediction, supervised by Prof. Roelof Burger and Prof. Absalom Ezugwu.

Develop and test AI models using real weather radar data, contribute to storm-prediction research, and collaborate with national and international partners.

📍 Potchefstroom
📅 Contract: 3 years
💰 Annual fellowship funding: R380 000–R450 000
🗓️ Closing date: 15 November 2026
🚀 Appointment date: 1 December 2026

Applicants must hold a PhD in Atmospheric Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, or a related field, with strong Python programming skills and experience in machine learning or deep learning.

Open to local and international applicants under 40 years of age. Preference will be given to South African citizens.

🏅 Celebrating excellence at UESM!

Congratulations to Prof. Louis du Preez, who received the prestigious Havenga Prize for Life Sciences from the South African Academy for Science and Arts on Friday, 2 October 2026.

This honour recognises his outstanding scientific career spanning more than three decades, including his contributions to herpetology and parasitology and the advancement of Afrikaans as a language of science.

The UESM is proud to celebrate this well-deserved recognition. Congratulations, Prof. du Preez! 👏

🌊 Postdoctoral research opportunity at NWU!

The Unit for Environmental Sciences and Management (UESM) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in Marine Sedimentary Geology and Foraminiferal Palaeoceanography, under the supervision of Prof. Eugene Bergh.

Explore past climate, ocean, and environmental change through marine sedimentary research and foraminiferal proxies.

📍 Based in Potchefstroom
🔬 Three-year fellowship, with annual performance reviews
💰 R320 000 annually, tax-free
🧪 R50 000 annually for project running expenses
🚚 R20 000 once-off relocation allowance

Applicants must hold a PhD in a relevant field obtained within the past five years and have experience in foraminiferal research.

📅 Appointment date: 1 January 2027
