Yet another brand-new grad who's already got a great job! Congrats to Rhythm Rathi (Loyalist '22 – the photo shows him on graduation day this month, with Journalism-Communications Prof. Andy Clarke). He's now the Local Journalism Initiative reporter at New Brunswick's historic Saint John Telegraph-Journal. Rhythm – who came from India to study and work in Canada – writes: "I cover Saint John and the very beautiful Charlotte County. We have a lot of fun stories here – my recent article was about Pete the Peacock, who escaped from a quarantine cage in the town of Saint Andrews!" He adds: "The best thing about being an LJI reporter is that my work goes on a portal and publications across Canada can publish it in their newspapers! Saint John is an amazing place and so is my job!!" From Loyalist Journalism straight into a fantastic media job! Congrats to 2022 grad Shira Rubinoff, who impressed the Global Peterborough TV newsroom so much during her placement there, while still at Loyalist, that she was offered the job of morning-show producer. Here's what she says about her new career: "As a morning-show producer, early hours aren’t a setback – they’re a perk. I get to write scripts and cut visuals for the live newscast, organize the lineup, keep an eye out for breaking news and set up daily interviews for one of the hosts. I join story meetings every morning, come up with story ideas, and I am respected as an equal team member in the newsroom. Even though I’m not in front of the camera, the show would not go on without me. I love being a producer!" If you're interested in a college program that gets you ready to jump into an exciting career in journalism/communications, check us out! Spots are still available for September 2022. Producing and broadcasting a radio newscast is one of the many skills that students in Loyalist Journalism-Communications learn. Last week's news anchor on Loyalist's campus radio station, 91X-FM, was student Rhythm Rathi. Using local stories reported and produced by his fellow journalism students, Rhythm delivered a professional newscast several times throughout each day. What a great career skill to have under your belt! (Many of our recent grads have gone on to careers in radio broadcasting.) If you'd like to learn more about how Loyalist can launch you on a rewarding career in journalism or communications, check out this link: https://www.loyalistcollege.com/programs-and-courses/full-time-programs/journalism-communications/. A four-week placement in a professional workplace is the capstone of the Loyalist Journalism-Communications experience. This year, 2021 grad James Tubb, a huge sports fan, was lucky enough to do a placement at The Hockey News. “It was not only a valuable experience but also a great time,” he says. “I had the opportunity to learn from/work alongside the same sports media personalities I had followed for years. The experience helped me learn what the industry is looking for and how to work with superstars. I was able to edit/fact check over 60 stories and transcribe interviews with hockey greats. And I got my first two professional bylines.” If this kind of real-world, career-building learning experience appeals to you, Loyalist Journalism-Communications is the place for you!
