What can disability justice teach us about solidarity, resistance, and building a better world?

Join UBC PHH for a talk with Dr. Heidi Janz (University of Alberta), a disability rights advocate, scholar, filmmaker, and playwright. Dr. Janz will explore how disabled communities build alliances, use humour to challenge ableism, and organize against injustice.

Drawing on her experience co-founding the People’s Alliance for Disabled Albertans (PADA), Dr. Janz will reflect on disability-led resistance to Alberta’s new Disability Assistance Program (ADAP), and how collective action and community-building are essential tools for survival in an increasingly ableist society.

If you've visited CF Richmond Centre recently, you might have noticed BALANCE, a new public art installation in the shopping centre's plaza by artist Rebecca Bayer.

What you might not know, is that the wavy patterns formed by its vertical bands are not abstractions or symbolic, but an authentic representation of the Fraser River Delta's submerged contours, thanks to Bayer’s use of bathymetric data provided by SFU Environmental Science professor and River Dynamics Lab lead, Jeremy Venditti.

Venditti, who has known Bayer for over a decade, recalls the conversation the two had where she shared news of the project and how she wanted to mimic the river’s shape and depth.

“And I said, well that’s interesting because you know, that’s what I study,” he says. “I have all that information.”

Bayer’s body of work includes pieces across the Lower Mainland commissioned by municipalities, developers, health institutions and transit authorities. All are grounded in ecological awareness and the unique qualities of the site, drawing directly from local geology, water systems, flora and fauna, as well as the colours in the surrounding ecosystem.

The public can see BALANCE in-person now at CF Richmond Centre in the City of Richmond. On March 14th, Bayer and Venditti will also speak at an Artist Salon at the Richmond Art Gallery.

Join the Chetna Association of Canada on March 15–16 for this year's Dr. Ambedkar Symposium on Emancipation (ASE 2026) on “Overcoming Caste Barriers for Social and Economic Equality.” The symposium brings together international scholars, activists, and policymakers to enhance awareness of caste-based discrimination in Canada and beyond. This two-day event will also serve as a hub for an ongoing research project at UBC, supported by SSHRC. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in an online survey and sign up for in-person interviews to help document the experience of caste in Canada.

The event is supported by the Government of Canada; Province of British Columbia; UBC Department of History and Centre for India and South Asia Research at UBC; Institute for the Humanities at Simon Fraser University, David Lam Centre, and SFU Political Science; Kwantlen Polytechnic University; South Asian Studies Institute at the University of the Fraser Valley; Hari Sharma Foundation; Ambedkar International Mission of Calgary; Homekey Mortgages Inc.; and other community organizations.
