As a student athlete far from home, Ella Magnussen learned that some of life's best opportunities come with stepping outside of your comfort zone and saying 'yes'.

“I think a lot of personal growth comes from putting yourself in unfamiliar situations, whether that means travelling, studying abroad, applying for a job somewhere new, or simply saying yes to experiences that feel a little intimidating at first,” says the new REM alumnus.

After an undergraduate journey full of embracing new experiences and pushing through challenges, Ella is bound for NYC in the fall for her next big adventure, where she will work on sustainable development initiatives with the UN 🎓🌎

New alumnus Aidan Parry knows that tackling some of the world's biggest challenges requires a breadth of skills and knowledge.

That's why he stacked his GES major with certificates in sustainable development and GIS, as well as a minor in resource and environmental management.

From mapping wildfire risk to supporting environmental planning and conservation, he's already putting his knowledge to work 🙌

British Columbia alone is home to nearly 500 known species of bees — the most of any province or territory in Canada — and yet pollinators, globally, face declining population numbers and threats of extinction.

Elizabeth Elle is a professor in SFU Biological Sciences and director of SFU’s School of Environmental Science who studies drivers behind pollinator diversity loss and gain in the gardens of Metro Vancouver, and teaches communities how they can support these essential insects.

“I got interested in pollinators because they’re so essential for plant reproduction. Nearly 90 per cent of flowering plants need a pollinator to reproduce,” says Elle. “I realized that if we’re committed to conserving rare ecosystems, we need the pollinators.”

This , Elle is sharing how everyone can support these essential insects at home. Read more: https://ow.ly/UPV750Z2qpB

The SFU-led Xwe'etay/Lasqueti Archaeology Project (XLAP) is the recipient of a 2026 Heritage BC Award for Education, Communications, and Awareness.

The XLAP celebrated and preserved Indigenous heritage on Xwe’etay, highlighting 8,000 years of Coast Salish settlement. Through collaborative exhibits, public art, and intergenerational events, the project fostered understanding, countered historical erasure, and strengthened relationships between Indigenous communities and local settlers.
