Join us for a Fireside Chat with Maria Klawe, former President of Harvey Mudd College and an internationally recognized computer scientist, mathematician, educator and leader in STEM.

Ahead of receiving an honorary degree from SFU, Maria will join the Faculty of Applied Sciences community for a conversation about her career and leadership journey, as well as her work to create more opportunities for women in computing, engineering, mathematics and STEM.

The conversation will be facilitated by Julia Read, with opportunities for attendees to ask questions and join the discussion.

Last Thursday, the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering brought the community together for its annual Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Engineering Practice Dialogue.

The conversation explored how Indigenous perspectives can be meaningfully integrated across engineering education, research and professional practice. From institutional and engineering perspectives, the discussion highlighted the importance of building relationships, trust, and supportive structures with the Indigenous community.

🌱A closer look at innovation in sustainable solutions for food security!

Last week, WLF Gardens unveiled the hydroponic garden — a system designed to grow crops without soil using the nutrient film technique — giving attendees an opportunity to explore the project and learn more about the work behind it.

In partnership with the Pacific Water Research Centre (PWRC), the team walked attendees through their system and shared insights into the design process, technical development and progress so far. It offered a close look at how engineering design and experimentation can contribute to more sustainable food production.

Last Friday, our Mechatronics community came together for the fifth annual Mechatronics Day ⚙️🎉

Throughout the afternoon, the event brought together students, alumni, faculty, industry professionals and the broader SFU community to reconnect, exchange ideas and explore innovative solutions across the field.

Highlights included:

◾Graduate student 5MT competition
◾Lab tours showcasing MSE research and innovation
◾Networking opportunities with students, alumni and industry professionals

Attendees also connected with our student groups while celebrating student achievements across academics, research communication, leadership, entrepreneurship and more.
