We are proud to share that Sustainable Energy Engineering Professor Vincenzo Pecunia has received the New Frontiers in Research Fund’s Exploration grant!

Working closely with local farmers and Indigenous communities, Pecunia and his team strive to improve the greenhouse systems to support Canada’s sustainable food production goals and climate resilience.

From advancing computer graphics research to shaping the next generation of computing leaders, Eugene Fiume’s career has left a lasting mark on the field.

As Dean of the Faculty of Applied Sciences and SFU School of Computing Science Professor, Fiume is a pioneering figure whose work has helped shape how digital imagery is created, simulated and understood. Throughout his career, he has published more than 140 research papers and contributed to innovation through industry and research collaboration.

Fiume continues to be recognized for his leadership and contributions to the field of computer science. Recently, he has been honoured with the 2025 CS-Can/Info-Can Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his outstanding contributions and lasting impact on the field.

From inspired to inspiring ✨

Amadea de Wit first discovered her passion for engineering in elementary school through FAS Outreach programs, where hands-on activities sparked her interest in robotics and biomedical engineering.

Since then, her SFU journey has taken her through student leadership, co-op placements, capstone projects and entrepreneurship. These experiences were all connected to Amadea's dedication: developing technologies that help people.

Now preparing to graduate from the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering, Amadea strives to inspire younger generations, especially young girls, to see themselves in STEM.

Swipe through to revisit a full day of sustainability energy research, ideas and connections 🌱

Earlier this month, the School of Sustainable Energy Engineering hosted SEEGRAD 2026, bringing together students, faculty, industry professionals and the broader SFU community for a day of presentations, idea exchange and discussions.

Throughout the day, SEE graduate students presented research addressing real-world sustainability challenges, from AI-supported vehicle and emission analysis and land use classification using supervised and unsupervised learning to solutions focused on reducing water loss and advancing carbon capture.

The day also featured an industry panel on the energy transition in British Columbia, offering participants insights into the challenges, opportunities and future directions shaping sustainable development.

A big thank-you to our presenters, panelists, attendees and everyone who helped make SEEGRAD 2026 possible! We are already looking forward to next year’s conference!⚡
