⚙️Ideas engineered into action

Last Tuesday, our fourth-year Engineering Science students presented the first stage of their capstone project, which they’ve spent months designing and building.

Research areas included sports training technologies and assistive healthcare solutions to systems designed to make engineering tasks easier. This term’s projects demonstrated the many ways engineering can respond to real-world needs.

We’re excited to see how these projects continue to grow in phase two✨

Congratulations to SFU School of Computing Science students Ilian Khankhalaev, Artyom Borodovitsyn and Daniil Simonian on winning the Grand Champion (Overall Best Project) award at the VSLive! Microsoft AI Hackathon 2026! 🏆

Hosted at Microsoft Headquarters in Washington, the team competed alongside experienced technology professionals and took home the top prize with AegisOps – an AI-powered cloud operations platform that helps organizations optimize workloads across Microsoft Azure based on latency, cost, carbon intensity and service availability.

The experience has boosted the team’s confidence in their technical abilities and inspired them to continue developing AegisOps beyond the hackathon. ☁️💻

Congratulations on this incredible achievement 🎉

Last Friday, the School of Mechatronic Systems Engineering (MSE) brought innovation in action to the spotlight at its Capstone Project Showcase! 🤖⚙️

Our fourth-year students presented their final prototypes, designed and built over eight months, to students, industry professionals and the public. From healthcare and assistive technologies to autonomous systems and smart agritech infrastructure, this year’s projects tackled a wide range of real-world challenges.

The MSE Capstone Project marks a culmination of students’ undergraduate journeys. By bringing together the technical knowledge, hands-on experience and collaborative skills, students have the opportunity to turn ideas into practical engineering solutions and demonstrate their readiness to take on complex challenges beyond the classroom.
