Struggling with Mental Well-Being?

A lot of students struggle with mental well-being. It's actually quite normal. You are not alone.

Many students have said that joining student social groups really helps to clear their mind. You have the time to get away from your studies because a clear focused mind will make studying easier.

So, get out and about!

Work Experience Matters

Students who had relevant work experience during their studies tended to get better jobs. In particular, college programs that included work placements led to positive career outcomes.

Take home message: Students should find programs that including work placement. If this is not possible, find relevant work experience, even if this means it takes longer to complete your degree.

Belief!

Students are much more likely to succeed if they believe they can complete the tasks laid out ahead of them. We call this self-efficacy.

Suppose there is a creek that is four feet wide. Most people believe they can jump across and will successfully jump across. Now suppose that it is not a creek. Suppose it is a crack in the Earth that is four feet wide but a mile deep. Far fewer people will believe they can jump across.

So self-belief matters. It is not just the task at hand but whether you believe you can do it. And whether you believe you can do it is not determined by the task alone. It is determined by your fears. The bigger your fears, the harder the task appears.

What can you do to improve self-efficacy. Be active. Seek feedback. Ask questions. Make sure you know the tasks at hand. If you don't understand, hit YouTube and find another explanation. Ask a classmate.

Help the Profs with Research!!

Whether you are studying science or history or whatever, help the professors with their research!

Undergrad students who take part in research tend to do better at college. Several studies have already shown that this is the case for STEM student (students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). The same is true for students in other study areas as well.

When students take part in research, they get an opportunity to be mentored by professors, they learn about how professionals in their field act, and they gain training and expertise. They also develop connections that can be used as references. Students who take part in research are also more likely to graduate.

Does Class Size Matter at University?

Do students in smaller classes do better at college than students in bigger classes? The short answer is that it depends on who you are.

For the most part, students whose families have been in the USA for more than one generation manage well in both large and small classes. Students who are immigrants and students who are the children of immigrants tend to do better in smaller classes. This is also the case for African American students.

The reason for this difference is that interacting with the professor and tutors helps students to do well in class. While "old timers" continue to interact with their professors in larger classes, African American students, immigrant students and first generation students may be less likely to do so.
