Join us for the launch of a report, tracing the colonial story of the lands on which SFU Burnaby sits, following the chain of title that links SFU's current title to the moment of original land theft in 1859. This is a story of massive land speculation, market crashes, tax seizures, land surveying, and park creation. It turns on racist assumptions of empty land, white supremacy, colonial 'improvement', and capitalist wealth creation.

Presenters: Kyle Willmott (Sociology and Anthropology) and Nick Blomley (Geography), with comments from Wenona Hall (Indigenous Studies)

PETER SCHAUB MEMORIAL BOOK PRIZE 🎓️

This prize, given annually to a Geography student in the graduating class, is dedicated to the memory of Peter Schaub, a former Dean's medal award winner and outstanding geography student, who was an active participant in the Geography Student Union (GSU).

This year's recipient, Isabel Nelson, is graduating with a BSc in Physical Geography, a certificate in Urban Studies and a GIS certificate. 🏔️

As of summer 2024, Isabel is working in the P***n Lab in SFU's Department of Biology funded by an NSERC USRA! The research team investigates cumulative effects of renewable energy infrastructure on the environment and biodiversity.

Following two years of working on a cumulative effects program at Environment and Climate Change Canada, she is excited to apply her understanding of policy to this project. After this summer, she plans to take some time away from school to rest and travel. She intends to return to school to pursue a master's degree so she can continue to study the relationships between people and the environment.

Isabel has been featured with the Faculty of Environment! Click here to see how she made a difference in her community throughout her degree and reflects on finding the right major: https://www.sfu.ca/fenv/news/physical-geography-graduate-tackles-challenges-in-local-communit.html

Congratulations Isabel!

This year's recipient, Akmal Aslam, is graduating with a BEnv in Global Environmental Systems, a minor in Geographic Information Science, and an Urban Studies Certificate. 🌎️

Currently, he is working with the BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship as a GIS Technician within their Surface Water team. He is involved in drought management by providing GIS Analysis and developing tools for field surveying. He intends to continue his career in GIS and is excited about the opportunities ahead.

Congratulations Akmal!

It is National Cartography Day in Brazil! While Canadians may not officially celebrate this day, we embrace any opportunity to celebrate all things related to Geography.

In celebration, we shine a spotlight on SFU MSc student Andre Araujo, a Lieutenant Commander in the Hydrographic Division of the Brazilian Navy.

Andre came to SFU to pursue a Master of Science with Professor Nick Hedley, a specialist in geovisualization and spatial interface research. As a member of Hedley's Spatial Interface Research Lab team, Andre's MSc is investigating the potential of mixed reality bathymetric data visualization interfaces to support enhanced perception and interpretation of 3D seafloor datasets. Truly 21st century mapping research!

Swipe through for photos from Andre's first publication titled "Bathymetric data visualization – A review of current methods, practices and emerging interface opportunities."

Be sure to check out Nick Hedley's Spatial Interface Research Lab at https://www.spatialinterfaceresearchlab.org/ for more exciting research!

Today is Earth Day! 🌎 🌱

Take a moment today to breathe in the fresh air, look at the blooms and hear the birds on this sunny day on campus.

Remember we are all here on this earth together. 🌎 We can take care of it with little acts of kindness such as picking up some litter or making someone’s day by doing a good turn.

Happy Earth Day! 🌳
