Today is International Day of the Girl Child. 💛

It’s a day to celebrate girls everywhere—and to stand behind their right to learn, participate, dream, and shape their own futures.

But not every girl has the same opportunities.

Girls living with disabilities can face harmful beliefs and discrimination that keep them from school, health care, family life, and their communities.

Sarah* knows this firsthand.

For years, she was isolated because of her disability. She couldn't attend school or get the health care she needed.

Then Mary believed in her.

Today, Sarah is in school. She is learning, playing, making friends, and participating in her community.

She knows she belongs.

It’s back-to-school season! 🎒

This month, our CAUSE Canada Sierra Leone team at the Kabala office distributed school supplies, including new backpacks, to students as they prepare for the year ahead.

Having the right supplies can help students arrive at school feeling prepared, confident and ready to learn. We’re grateful to be able to support these students as they head into a new school year—and to help create opportunities for them to learn, grow and do their best.

Mary is a woman living with a disability in Sierra Leone. She became a community champion for Sarah and helped her family see that Sarah’s disability did not define her future.
