The mandate of the Writing Symbols at the University of Calgary is to provide a culturally appropriate environment that encourages and supports the success of Aboriginal students in their pursuit of knowledge and higher education. The Writing Symbols provides academic, personal, and cultural support services and programs to prospective and current First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, and offers a welcoming and supportive learning environment for the whole campus community.

New to university, or looking to expand your academic toolbox? Register for UNIV 205 in the Fall 2026 term!

University 205: Effective Learning Strategies is offered through the Faculty of Arts in conjunction with the Writing Symbols Lodge and taught through an Indigenous lens. This course is designed to give students the academic skills they need to succeed in post secondary and also create a supportive community around them.

Here are the course details (note: we will not be offering a Winter 2027 section this year):
Fall 2026 Regular Schedule (section 1): Closed to ISAP students only.
Fall 2026 Regular Schedule (section 5): Open to all Indigenous students. Fridays 1:00pm-3:45pm.

Noella Wells/Ootaikimmiakii, BEd, MEd, will be joining us for the upcoming IRTP session, along with other Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and Indigenous professionals! The next Indigenous Relations Training Program will be August 18-21, 2026.

Registration is open to all students, staff, or community members seeking to better understand the lasting attempts of colonization that affect Canada's Indigenous population today and how to effectively build relationships with Indigenous communities.

Participants who complete all eight modules of the Indigenous Relations Training Program will receive a formal certificate, verifying that the participant has completed 24 hours of non-credit Professional Development.
