One summer internship changed everything for Story Saha.

The Schulich School of Engineering Master's student spent his summer inside one of Canada’s largest lumber operations through our Transformative Talent Internship program. At West Fraser’s Blue Ridge Lumber division, he worked on improving mill operations, tracking kiln performance and applying engineering concepts in real industrial environments.

What made the experience unforgettable was not only the technical work. Living in a small rural hamlet gave Story a completely different perspective on resilience, collaboration and community. The experience strengthened both his professional skills and personal confidence, eventually opening the door to a full time role with the company after his graduation next week.

Throwback Thursday! A look back at 2013 shows the Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) in action, volunteering with the Good Food Box Program to help improve food access in Calgary.

Each box packed was part of a larger effort to support individuals and families through a sustainable, community driven model.

It is a clear example of how FGS extends its impact beyond research and into the community.

Behind every poverty reduction strategy are years of conversations, partnerships and people working toward change. Haskayne School of Business MBA candidates Kamalpreet Dhillon, BSc’20, and Basma Akhter, BSc’21, explored exactly that through a research partnership with the Tamarack Institute, documenting two decades of poverty reduction efforts across Calgary and Hamilton.

Their findings showed that solving complex social issues requires more than policy alone. It takes organizations willing to connect sectors, communities willing to listen and future leaders ready to tell the stories that often go unseen.

Choosing a graduate program is a big decision, and it helps to hear from people who have been through it.

University of Calgary graduate student ambassadors are sharing their own perspectives on what it can feel like to choose graduate studies, from navigating the application process to finding community and imagining life as a graduate student.

Through their experiences with The Ambassador Platform, they offer a more honest and personal look at the questions, uncertainty and moments of growth that can come with taking that next step.

When Calgary blooms in May, it is a reminder that graduate school is about more than research and coursework. It is about where you land, who you meet and what surrounds you while you build something meaningful.

With 333 days of sunshine, river pathways and the Rockies just over an hour away, the University of Calgary offers a graduate experience that goes beyond the classroom and stays with you long after your degree.

Moose population declines are raising urgent questions across the country and Brendan Carswell is working to answer them through collaboration.

A 2025 Killam scholar and PhD student in the University of Calgary Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary, Brendan is partnering with Opaskwayak Cree Nation to explore both the biological and cultural dimensions of these changes. His research weaves GPS collar data, trail camera imagery and Indigenous Knowledge to better understand how moswa (moose) are using their habitat and how those patterns are shifting.

The work is grounded in a broader commitment to transdisciplinary research at UCalgary. “I sought UCalgary largely for my advisor, but I have come to appreciate its commitment to transdisciplinary and community-based research,” he explains.

Supported by the Killam scholarship, Carswell can deepen these partnerships and focus on research that reflects community priorities. His work demonstrates how meaningful collaboration can strengthen both science and its real-world impact.
