What a way to welcome Haskayne's Class of 2030! 🎉

Today, we kicked off the new year by welcoming our newest BComm students to Haskayne at our First-Year Orientation. From the tradeshow and carnival games to the ENTI 381 pop-up market, there was no shortage of energy and excitement. Students had the chance to discover all that Haskayne has to offer, meet their new classmates and connect with faculty, staff and student leaders.

A huge thank you to everyone who helped make our largest orientation ever such a success.

New grant funding for Canada's first neurofinance laboratory will lead the way in understanding how humans interact with automated financial tools, and what that means for investors.

Despite the popularity of digital finance platforms, "we still do not fully understand how the design of these platforms shapes the decisions people make with their money," says grant recipient Dr. Marius Zoican, PhD, Canada Research Chair in FinTech at Haskayne.

CFI John R. Evans Leaders Fund supports next generation of UCalgary research

Business decisions shape the lives of consumers, communities and society as a whole. By connecting business research with real-world challenges, five recently funded research projects at the Haskayne School of Business are seeking to better understand issues that affect people every day, including shopping, housing, education and pharmacies.

Supported through grants from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), Haskayne researchers Ruth Pogacar, Qiang Wang, Miguel Palacios and Luminita Enache, PhD, CPA, RN will advance research with meaningful implications for complex societal issues.

At Haskayne, the BMO Mentorship Program bridges that gap by connecting students with experienced business leaders who offer real-world insights, career advice and new perspectives.

Operated by the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership in Business, the program connects business undergrads and graduates with experienced business leaders through one-on-one mentoring relationships. Through these connections, mentees have opportunities to gain industry insights and expand their networks while also developing the confidence and leadership skills to navigate their next steps.

Congratulations to Karen K. Ngo, BComm’20, on being named the 2026 UCalgary Alumni Arch Award recipient for Early Career Achievement!

Since graduating from the Haskayne School of Business, Ngo has built an impressive career at Microsoft, where she currently works in the Office of the Chairman and CEO at the company’s U.S. headquarters.

But Ngo’s impact extends well beyond her own career. Through a career blog launched in 2017, Ngo has built a community of more than 40,000 followers and created resources such as her Career Walking Deck System that have helped students and professionals navigate their own career journeys.

"What actually makes my life and career meaningful is knowing that what I have learned in my career can actually help someone else with theirs,” she says.

Canada is facing a productivity crisis. Simply adopting more technology may not be the answer.

That's the question at the heart of new research from Drs. Vaarun Vijairaghavan and Barrie Nault at the Haskayne School of Business, along with their colleague Dr. Rahat Jafri.

“IT spending has exploded over the past few decades," says Vijairaghavan. "But businesses and policymakers still lack precise answers about how this IT spending affects firm costs, and the quality of a firm’s financial reports.”

The project, with funding from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), is examining not only whether technology helps businesses operate more efficiently, but also whether it improves the quality of the information investors rely on to make decisions.

The team’s work aims to identify practical ways technology can strengthen business performance and support a more productive Canadian economy.

What started as a conversation between friends has evolved into a university-exclusive carpooling platform designed to transform the daily student commute.

And its founders credit their experience through Haskayne’s RBC Fast Pitch competition with helping them develop the idea and move it forward.

URide, developed by UCalgary students Mico Ben Issa and Omar Almishri, connects students with drivers travelling similar routes. The idea was sparked by a simple request between peers: one friend wanted to leave campus early, while another asked for a 30-minute wait to secure a ride. The interaction highlighted a gap in student transportation and led to the creation of the service.

The platform allows users to find rides that match their routes, while managing scheduling and payments. It also charges no upfront fees, with students paying only when they need a ride.

URide has already found success, securing first place in its tier at Calgary Hacks. The founders also say RBC Fast Pitch was a turning point for the business.

How much space does a person really need? That’s the question posed by a team of students that’s been recognized for challenging conventional assumptions about housing at a national systems thinking competition.

Haskayne student Jonathan Mendez-Young was part of a cross-university group that won a top award for challenging conventional assumptions about housing at the Systems Innovation Challenge in Toronto.

The group – which consisted of students from the University of Calgary, University of Prince Edward Island and Université de Sherbrooke – examined the relationship between shrinking household sizes and growing home sizes in Canada, instead of focusing solely on increasing housing supply.

The award received by Mendez-Young’s team was one of four presented at the national competition, which was organized by the Ivy Business School at Western University. This year's challenge attracted 245 participants, with 35 students advancing to the final, in-person stage in Toronto.

Leonard Jawe’s journey to the Haskayne Accelerated MBA program has taken him across continents, provinces and career paths.

Originally from Uganda, Jawe moved to Canada to pursue his Bachelor of Commerce at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax. After graduating, his career took him west to Yellowknife, where he worked in accounting for more than two years before eventually making his way to Calgary.

Now, as a CPA and student in Haskayne’s Accelerated MBA program, Jawe is continuing that journey by building on his accounting background while preparing for the next stage of his career.

“I feel like I’ve gotten an understanding of the technical accounting,” he says. “Now, I want to move into a more managerial role.”

For Jawe, the Accelerated MBA stood out as a way to build on his previous education, complete his degree sooner and reach his career goals faster.

“I wanted to get there as quickly as possible and using the most economical route,” he says. “The Accelerated option was a good fit.”

Since starting the program in September 2025, Jawe has embraced the opportunity to learn, engage and grow his professional network. In fact, that in-person experience was a key factor in choosing Haskayne.

“To get the most benefit out of the MBA, I felt it needed to be in person because I would allow me to connect with fellow students, professors and make better networks.”
