Hello everyone! The Japanese Culture series is coming to a close. We have just one last presentation for you. Drawing the Holocaust in Postwar Manga, by Professor Ben Whaley, takes a look at the way that the Jewish experience in the holocaust has been adapted for Japanese audiences, particularly through its portrayal in manga. This event takes place on March 11th, in CHE212, from 5 to 6 PM. A detailed description can be found below. This event is free and open to all U of C students, so please come check it out! (Note: You do not have to RSVP for this event.)

Drawing the Holocaust in Postwar Manga
Date & Time: March 11, 2019 | 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Location: CHE 212
Speaker: Ben Whaley

In 1969, there were over ten different prose, illustrated story, and manga (print comic) versions of Anne Frank’s famous The Diary of a Young Girl (1947, 1952 English and Japanese) actively serialized in magazines for young Japanese girls. That Anne’s Diary is read, taught, and performed the world over is well-known. That it has become a canonical text and an important source of knowledge and insight into the Jewish experience for the Japanese could come as a surprise. This talk begins with Anne Frank’s legacy in Japan and suggests that Jewish heroines have had a hidden generative power in Japanese pop culture, particularly in shōjo manga (girls’ comics). Furthermore, manga representations of the Holocaust necessitate a rethinking of how shōjo manga can narratively and visually bear witness to acts of mass atrocity.

「Women in Japanese Commercials」
By Luminita Gurita
February 11th (Mon) 2018 | 5:00PM – 6:30 PM
Location: CHE 212

Commercials have been in our lives since the beginning of the first radio broadcasts and we all have gotten accustomed to have them present in our lives, either on TV, on the radio or more recently online. On the topic of TV commercials, do Japanese people actually watch them? Then, how are commercials reflecting the characteristics of the culture of the public they target? Are there any particular characteristics for the Japanese commercials run on TV? How about the people shown in these commercials: is there a particular way that commercials are showing a specific category – for example women? These are only a few of the questions whose answers are targeted in this talk.
