We are thrilled to celebrate the first recipient of the Health Services and Policy Research Impact Award, Dr. Sumantra (Monty) Ghosh, MD! 👏🏼

This award recognizes Dr. Ghosh’s exceptional research impact and the success of the National Overdose Response Service (NORS), a full service virtual safe consumption hotline and peer wellness program.

An internist and addiction specialist in both Edmonton and Calgary, Dr. Ghosh is also an assistant professor at and the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry - University of Alberta. His research focuses on advancing system-level responses to substance use, homelessness, and health inequity with a central focus on overdose prevention and response.

The NORS program has become a lifeline to some of Canada’s most vulnerable people. The peer-driven service is operated in partnership with Grenfell Ministries, co-led by CEO Lisa Morris-Miller, and run by individuals with personal experience in substance use who provide confidential 24-hour support and supervision.

The inaugural research impact award celebrates the ability of the NORS project to sustain success since its launch in 2020. It is also an important recognition of the program's contributions to social and economic prosperity through the creation of meaningful employment and leadership opportunities for people with lived experience of substance use.

Presented by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Canadian Association of Health Services and Policy Research, the HSPR Impact Award recognizes research that has made an impact by contributing to the transformation of health systems, improving people’s lives, or generating social or economic benefits. It celebrates research that has moved beyond publication to achieve real-world impact.

“The CIHR CASPR Award for Social Impact is recognition of the extraordinary work being done by NORS and Grenfell Ministries,” says Dr. Ghosh. “Their staff, volunteers, and participants are creating real change on the ground. As a researcher, I was fortunate enough to help tell that story.

“The value of research is not simply to publish findings, but to provide credible evidence that helps governments and policymakers understand what works,” he adds. “Supporting community organizations in demonstrating their impact is essential if we want effective programs to receive the recognition, investment, and sustainability they deserve.”

During Alberta Rural Health Care Week, City Council is proud to support the welcome of the inaugural Southern Alberta Medical Program class at the University of Lethbridge 🎉

“This is an important moment for our city and our region,” said Mayor Hyggen. “We want to welcome these students and recognize the outstanding effort of local physicians and community members who helped build this program. Many of these doctors have been doing this work on top of their regular clinical work to care for the residents of this community.”

This milestone reflects strong partnerships and a shared commitment to training future doctors in rural and regional communities. By learning and building connections here, these students are helping strengthen healthcare across southern Alberta, now and into the future.

's Dr. Cathy Eastwood, PhD, and Dr. Max Jajszczok, PhD, are conducting research to better understand barriers and enablers to community-based private practice nursing. They are surveying nurses across Alberta, including RNs, LPNs, RPNs and NPs.

The purpose of their study is to explore regulated nurses’ interest in private practice nursing in home-based care in Alberta, the main barriers they face, and the kinds of supports, tools, mentorship, and system enablers that could make this model more feasible and sustainable. It has been approved by the University of Calgary Conjoint Health Research Ethics Board (REB26-0334).

We are proud to celebrate 2026 Top 30 Under 30 honouree, Prosper Komolafe! ✨

A Calgary‑based global health advocate, Prosper has been selected by the Alberta Council for Global Cooperation for his leadership in advancing youth‑centered health equity. At just 20 years old, Prosper has established himself as a committed researcher, community builder, and emerging voice in public health.

Prosper is a University of Calgary Faculty of Science student who has worked with an impressive list of UCalgary initiatives and institutes, including Health Equity for All (HE4L), the O'Brien Institute for Public Health and Right to Play UCalgary. He's also a research assistant with Libin Cardiovascular Institute.

Across these roles, Prosper focuses on improving access to health and wellness supports for young people, particularly those facing systemic barriers. He also helps connect people separated by systems, creating spaces where knowledge can move in both directions.

“Meaningful development cannot occur in isolation. Connection is the bridge between evidence and impact; it is how research becomes relevant, how policy becomes responsive, and how systems remain accountable to the people they serve,” says Prosper.

His approach blends evidence‑based research with a strong emphasis on empathy and youth engagement. He champions the belief that meaningful progress occurs when young people are empowered to shape the policies and programs that affect their lives.

Prosper’s recognition as a 2026 Top 30 Under 30 honouree highlights both his impact to date and his growing influence in the field of global health. His work continues to inspire a new generation of leaders dedicated to building more equitable, inclusive systems of care. 👏🏽

We are very excited about the potential of living medicines to advance the next generation of precision medicine for patients with cancer, autoimmune disease and many other health conditions.

The Living Medicines Initiative (LMI) is building on the momentum of the International Microbiome Centre, the Riddell Centre for Cancer Immunotherapy and seven research institutes at the Cu***ng School of Medicine as it investigates new therapies based on cells, genes and microbes that can sense, respond to and repair disease at its source.

Led by Drs. Kathy McCoy, PhD, and Kevin Hay, MD, the LMI will integrate discovery, manufacturing and clinical translation to accelerate treatment for disease, offering new possibilities for conditions that remain difficult or impossible to treat today.

research teams are dedicated to developing this next pillar in modern medicine and therapies, an incredible opportunity to advance individualized patient care using living medicines.
