Join us in person or online for Dr. Anne McIntosh’s Distinguished Professorial Lecture, “Lessons from the Field – The journey of a forest ecologist,” on Wednesday, October 14!

During the event, McIntosh will highlight life lessons she’s brought back from her 25 years of research within forests. By doing this, she will shed light on natural and anthropogenic disturbances on forests and how they recover in the long term to deepen your connection to and understanding of the natural world.

As the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaches on September 30, Augustana and community volunteers placed thousands of orange flags on campus. This annual installation acknowledges and remembers the lives lost and impacted by the Indian Residential School System.

Along with these flags, various signs have been placed around campus identifying the residential schools that operated within 500 km of our campus. Signs also identify the commitments the U of A has made in its Indigenous Strategic Plan: Braiding Past, Present and Future.

This installation will remain up until October 2. All are welcome to visit this memorial installation to learn and reflect.

Researchers at Augustana have developed a new AI tool called JupOtter, designed to catch bugs in open-source Jupyter Notebook.

Built on three key breakthroughs, including a smart code-reading strategy and a custom dataset of 21,000+ flawed notebooks, the tool outperforms standard code-checkers and large language models at finding errors.

Learn more:

Jupyter Notebook, a go-to software platform scientists use to do their work, could become less glitchy thanks to U of A researchers who pinpointed its most common bugs with an eye to improving the security of users’ data.

A warm welcome back to Dr. Rissa Reist! We're so happy to welcome Rissa as a new assistant professor at Augustana, especially as an alumna from 2016.

Rissa's research explores whether states and institutions behave as she does: using humour to tell their own narratives about settler-colonial violence in Canada.

Learn more about Rissa and her research:

Rissa Reist examines how different political systems reinforce the normalcy of settler-colonial violence.

Check out this recent research from Augustana assistant professor Dr. Huanqing Chen!

A new way to accurately measure the distance between quasar pairs — the blazing, black-hole-powered centres of distant galaxies that appear side by side in space — is showing promise through University of Alberta research.

On September 8, we welcomed our campus community at an event in honour of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's 10th anniversary of the release of its Final Report and 94 Calls to Action. A special thank you to Dr. Marie Wilson (former Commissioner of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada), Stephen Kakfwi (former Premier of the Northwest Territories and residential school Survivor), and moderator Dr. Matthew Wildcat (Associate Professor and Director of Indigenous Governance, Faculty of Native Studies) for their conversation on truth, reconciliation and the responsibilities that remain before us.

We are grateful for the opportunity to reflect, learn, and connect during this conversation and at the book signing and meal that followed.

This event was part of "By Strength, We Are Still Here: Truth, Reconciliation, and Survivor-Led Dialogue," a series of gatherings organized by Dr. Crystal Gail Fraser (Historian and Associate Professor, Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Native Studies) and supported by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council Connections grant.
