On Saturday, May 6, the first Holland Hurricanes Chess Festival will take place in the Cafeteria of the Charlottetown Centre of the Prince of Wales Campus. This event is a joint effort between Holland College and the Charlottetown Chess Club (CCC) in order to raise funds for CCC members who will play on the PEI Provincial Scholastic Team at the Canadian Chess Challenge, May 21 and 22 in Montreal.
Schedule:
1:00 p.m. -Hurricane Blitz Championship- We will be using a modified "Arena" Format, so players can get in as many games as possible over a 75 minute period. Time control is 3 minutes with a 2 second increment. The expectation is that players will get 8-10 games. We will have book prizes. There will be a maximum of 30 players. To play, you can make a voluntary donation before or during the event.
2:30 p.m. - Holland College student and Provincial Champion, Jorge Moreno, is conducting a 30 Board Simultaneous. If you haven't seen one of these before, Jorge will take on 30 opponents at once moving from board to board over the course of approximately 2.5 - 3 hours. Book prizes to any players who can beat Jorge. This is the first such event in PEI in many years. To play, you can make a voluntary donation before or during the event.
All Day
Talks for parents and students: Throughout the day we will have prominent players from the province, who will talk about different topics related to chess and its benefits as an educational tool. Among the topics covered will be the relationship between academic performance and chess, psychological preparation before a tournament, and how to guide children who want to start competing.
Book and Set Sale: A selection of chess books ranging in price from $10 - $30 as well as some interesting and unique chess sets. A minimum of 25% of the proceeds will go to the players.
