Student Field Technician:
Conduct BBEMA field research protocols: Ecological field work will include: Stream restoration, Pollinator habitat assessment, wetland surveys, weekly stream health assessments - collection of stream samples, water quality chemistry analysis, aquatic invertebrate population assessment, fish habitat index. Implement Songbird habitat enhancement activities, tree and seedling transport, care, planting, mulch application, pruning and transplanting where required. Implement Community Aquatic Monitoring Program Protocols - assisting Department of Fisheries and Oceans to conduct monitoring of fish and crustaceans including invasive species in the Bedeque Bay Estuary. Conduct community outreach programs: plan, publicize, coordinate and implement community Environmental Education Activity Days for Adults and youth alike- conduct hands on educational tours for schools, tourists, and community groups. Assist with cleaning, inventory or purchase of field/lab equipment and supplies where required. All field work will require collecting accurate notes in a field book or on data sheets, transferring data regularly to spreadsheets, conducting some graphic analysis, Students will be required to conduct some internet research where applicable for species biological monitoring where required assist BBEMA staff with updating BBEMA web page.
Students will be trained and supervised by the Field Crew Leader to conduct all field/lab research protocols. BBEMA Water Education and Outreach Coordinator will provide training /mentoring on how to plan, publicize, coordinate and implement a successful community based workshop or event- and will in assist the development of communication and promotional materials including brief articles for media. BBEMA Executive Director in partnership with Department of Fisheries and Oceans Coordinator will provide training on monitoring of Aquatic Invasive Species and field protocols
Student will participate in orientation (including office operations, BBEMA staff policy manual, time sheets and expense forms) Field safety gear, rain gear, rubber boots, bug suites, hip waders, chest waders, are provided for students for the summer work. BBEMA Executive Director will meet with students to: review videos on water monitoring protocols, CABIN booklet and Calpers manual to be familiar with procedures of monitoring. Review previous year's summer report and those of other years to ensure familiarity with activities conducted in past year and also to be aware of new activities.
Qualifications: Currently enrolled in:
High School, Wildlife Technician Diploma, Bachelor of Science-Biology or Environmental Studies Diploma.
