🍐 Pear-fecting their skills! 👩‍🍳✨

Our culinary students put their skills to work creating poached pears with silky crème anglaise—a classic dessert that’s all about technique, timing, and a little finesse.

With guidance from their instructor, Chef John Garrett, students are learning how to turn simple ingredients into something truly delicious—from poaching to plating. 👨‍🍳✨

And yes… they definitely pear-ed beautifully with that crème anglaise! 😉

👩‍🍳 Our Culinary students are off to a great start!

The new semester is in full swing, and our Culinary students have been busy wrapping up their baking unit and putting their skills into practice. From breads and pastries to pies, they’ve been working hard in the kitchen! 🥐🥧

They also kicked off the year with a visit to UFV’s Agriculture Department, where they toured the facilities and learned more about the hands-on work happening across campus. 🌱

It’s been a great start to the semester, and we’re looking forward to seeing what our students create next!

☕️ Mark your calendars! Our Culinary Café opens for service on September 8. We look forward to welcoming you back and serving up some of the delicious creations our students have been working on!

🔧⚡🚰🍳 Four trades. Four weeks. Endless learning opportunities.

Participants in the recently completed SASET Youth in Trades Program explored Automotive Service, Culinary Arts, Electrical, and Plumbing through hands-on training with experienced instructors.

From shop and kitchen safety, oil and filter changes, and preparing Hainan chicken rice, to proper wire handling, soldering pipes, clearing plugged toilets, and disassembling kitchen faucets, each week provided practical experience and insight into the skilled trades.

A standout moment was seeing a light bulb illuminate after students successfully completed and energized their own electrical circuit, bringing classroom learning to life.

In addition to developing trade skills, participants earned valuable industry-recognized certifications that support future employment and training opportunities.

The program concluded with a shared meal prepared alongside their Culinary Arts instructor, offering a chance to celebrate new skills, experiences, and connections made throughout the journey.

🐟👨‍🍳 From filleting to plating!

Our Explore Trades Sampler students rolled up their sleeves in the Culinary Arts module, where they learned from Chef Wolfgang Schmelcher how to fillet fish, prepare a delicious meal from scratch, and enjoy the fruits of their hard work together.

One of the best parts of hands-on learning is discovering something new. Student Calvin C. shared:

*"I usually don't like fish, but I really enjoyed the dish that we prepared."*

Moments like these show how trying new skills can open the door to new experiences, new skills, and even new favourite foods!

A big thank you to Chef Wolfgang Schmelcher for sharing his expertise and inspiring our students through hands-on learning.

Great job to all of our students for embracing the challenge and creating a meal they could be proud of. 👏🍽️
