North Island College's DIGITAL Design + Development department offers a number of design and develop

Design is about more than making things look good. It’s about making sense of the world and imagining how we might make it better.

Our very own North Island College Digital Design + Dev faculty and Dept Coordinator, Claire Guiot, will be leading a workshop at Royal Roads University as part of the Creative Changemaking in Action conference, hosted by the Eric C. Douglass Centre for Creative Changemaking.

As part of a branding research project, participants will create personal data postcards using colour, shapes, and visual codes, exploring how visual languages can make complex data accessible, express identity, and inspire change.

MEET Jason Elumbaring! 💻

Jason came to our Digital Design + Development Post-Graduate Diploma program with a BSc in Engineering and more than 15 years of experience as a computer maintenance technician.

As a student, he was always keen to take on new challenges. For his capstone project, he developed a dental image management and patient record-keeping app, tackling a pretty complex problem and putting his technical skills to work.

Today, he works right here at North Island College as a Client Support Analyst in our IT department!

It’s pretty great to see someone bring so much previous experience into the program, add a whole new set of skills, and then find a place to put them to work right here at NIC. 🙌

🎂 Happy birthday, Charlene Roberts!

We're celebrating with a look back at the First Line Mortgage identity Charlene built as a Communication Design Diploma student — a complete brand system in bold red and black, from the monogram and patterned collateral right through to letterhead, business cards, envelopes, branded pens and pencils, and a responsive website mockup.

Strong mark, consistent system, and no detail left unconsidered. Exactly the kind of thinking that carries a designer from student work to professional practice.

BACK IN THE DAY… 🖥️

When layers and masks in Photoshop were the only way to create composite images, making something like this was a lot of work! It took technical skill and patience to bring all those elements together, but the real skill is being able to use those tools to create a mood and tell a visual story.

This piece was created by Communication Design Diploma graduate Jason Thompson, currently working as a Project Support Specialist at Medium Rare Interactive Inc., when he was a student in our Computer Graphics course.
