Congratulation to Harley! 🙌🎉

Congratulations to this year's recipient of the Coda IEP Student Interpreter Grant: Harley Shea! 🙌

We can't wait to watch you succeed as an interpreter. Your passion and dedication are inspiring!

"Firstly, I’d like to extend my deepest gratitude to Asign. I am so honoured to be this year’s recipient of the Coda IEP Student Interpreter Grant.

Returning to school to pursue a career as an Interpreter has been a life-changing experience, one that has helped me re-discover myself and strengthen my connection with my Coda heritage.

Receiving this grant is such a privilege, and I truly feel more motivated and inspired than ever to continue my education and future work alongside the community that has helped shape who I am.

Thank you, Asign, for supporting Codas in our academic journeys, and for showing belief in mine."

—Harley Shea

Thank you to everyone who applied and thank you to the Wilson family for their generous contribution. 💙

Celebrating Bev - the manager of our ASL Studies Program and Sign Language Interpreting Program!

“My career in deaf education truly started as a little girl when I’d spend every Saturday at the library, reading books and soaking up new knowledge. My passion to learn and teach has taken me around the world, improving access to different styles of sign language for many people in the deaf community.

Sign language is my first language. My siblings and I were born deaf, to deaf parents. Growing up, the only ones in the hearing world in my home were our pets. My parents were fluent in Maritime Sign Language (MSL), so I’ve had lots of exposure to various language styles but excelled in American Sign Language (ASL).

Attending Gallaudet University changed everything for me. As the global leader in education for Deaf students, I could learn directly from my teachers who used sign language in the classrooms. It empowered me to chase my dreams, complete my doctorate, dissertation and begin my PhD. Being able to help reduce communication barriers within the deaf community, from Texas to Thailand, South Korea and beyond, brings me so much joy. I’m also developing the world’s only digital dictionary that documents thousands of MSL signs to preserve the language from extinction.

After 42 years, my work has come full circle, bringing me home to Nova Scotia. Last year, I excitedly joined NSCC as Manager of the ASL and ASL interpreting programs. Through my role at the College, I’m developing innovative curriculum for our ASL programs, leading change to elevate our offerings for new leaners, and so much more. It’s beautiful to be back home and using my passion for education to give back to the community that has been so supportive of me since I was young.”
