Building Bridges
The Bridges program has been carefully designed to attract and retain young people from at risk, multicultural, newcomer, and marginalized communities in Edmonton. This year long out of school time project was created in order to bring together community stakeholders, local industry and young people who recognize Edmonton as a great place to live, work and play where youngsters c
an grow, develop, and thrive in a nurturing, safe environment. Program Scope
Instruction ranges from creative arts, sports, english, social studies, math, sciences and spelling in the University of Alberta. Youths, tutors, and administrative staff are very culturally diverse allowing a unique community vision that promotes the image of a Canadian multicultural mosaic. In addition to tutoring, university interns also act as mentors to help facilitate growth in each child with the intention of furthering athletic, arts, community engagement and academic achievement, while encouraging ongoing pursuit of post-secondary education. Our after-school program is active during the university academic school year (September - June) from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm, running from Monday to Friday at the University of Alberta. Interns and youth participants are encouraged to volunteer with partnering or supporting non-profit organizations for special events, early career exposure and as well any additional community engagement opportunities with prospective university and community groups.
