Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge is pleased to host Renee Racette, Marilyn Charleyboy, and Todd Kovercuk for a special panel on lawmaking.

Drafting an Indigenous law asks something different of lawyers. In this session, we share what we learned while drafting a law that truly reflects a Nation's culture and legal traditions, braiding together land, language and people. We will explore new approaches, why this process differs from any other drafting, how culture, traditional protocols and ceremony shape the work itself, and the shift from being the expert to being the learner and engaging in co-development with Language Speakers and Knowledge Keepers. Participants will leave with practical lessons for their own work with Indigenous communities.

On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, we honour Survivors of residential schools, the children who never came home, and the families and communities who continue to live with their impacts.

Truth asks us to listen to Survivors and understand the systems that caused this harm. Reconciliation asks us to act on what we learn.

At the Wahkohtowin Law & Governance Lodge, our work is grounded in the strength of Indigenous laws and the relationships and responsibilities they carry. Today, we reflect on our responsibility to support that work with care, accountability, and sustained action.
