U of A Community Service-Learning - CSL Welcome to Community Service-Learning (CSL) at the University of Alberta! Questions? Comments? Please contact us.

Community Service-Learning (CSL) offers University of Alberta students the opportunity to work and make a difference with a local community group, while reflecting and putting their experiences in context within a university course. These community partnerships provide opportunities for students to gain valuable experience, and to contribute and increase their awareness of the social and political

life of their community. When enrolled in a CSL class, students participate in a community project that is both relevant to the course content and useful to the partnering non-profit organization. Students typically spend about 20 hours over the semester with a community organization; course assignments and activities help students learn from and through those experiences.

Meet Heather Mackenzie (she/her), the executive director of .ca β˜€οΈ

Heather emphasizes her appreciation for the the two-way relationship that has formed between her organization and university students. While students get to learn new skills and discover their strengths, Solar Alberta benefits from the strong research and communication skills that CSL students posses πŸ“šβœοΈ

"Part of our work with CSL was to benefit us, but part of it is also for those students to get a look inside the green NGO sector and the solar industry in particular and to see what's out there and where their skills might be relevant." πŸ§‘β€πŸ’ΌπŸŒΏ

Meet our community partner .journeys_trinity πŸ“šβœοΈ

CSL students placed with Braided Journeys assisted with tutoring students to help them catch up on their school work. This also included learning about the challenges within the education system such as food insecurity and large classroom sizes πŸ§‘β€πŸ«βœπŸ»

πŸ’¬ β€œThis helped him better understand the broader challenges educators navigate daily and the importance of supporting the whole child, not just academics.”
