**EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY**

Aurora Academic Charter School in Edmontonhis currently seeking a teacher who will teach Social Studies and English Language Arts at our Sherbrooke Campus (12245 131 Street NW). It is a full-time position (1.0 FTE). The qualified teacher will be teaching grade 5-7 Social Studies, grade 7 Health, and grade 7 English Language Arts.

Applicants must be living in the Edmonton area, have a current Alberta Teaching Certificate and have a Bachelor of Education preferably with a specialization in Social Studies and English Language Arts.

Education students, faculty and staff gathered on Sept. 24 for the Fall 2026 Celebration of Excellence, where undergraduates received certificates of recognition for their learning as preservice teachers, as nominated by their instructors in the Winter 2026 term

Over 550 certificates were awarded to more than 450 undergraduate students from main campus, the Aboriginal Teacher Education Program, and in our collaborative programs in Grande Prairie and Fort McMurray as well as our English Language School.

Elder Cal Cardinal offered a blessing and, with the ATEP team, gifted a song. Vice Dean Dr. Jacqueline Leighton provided a welcome on behalf of the Faculty, and Associate Dean, Research, Dr. Temitope Oriola, brought congratulations from the College of Social Sciences & Humanities. Program support coordinator Adrian Xavier and professor Dr. Kent Lee led the certificate celebration.

Special thanks to all volunteers including support staff, instructors and faculty for making this event so successful.

Meet Dr. Vicheth Sen, an Assistant Professor contributing to the Adult, Community and Higher Learning Program, who joined the Faculty of Education in July 2026.

Born and raised in a rural farming village in Cambodia, Dr. Sen says his own path to teaching and doing research at Canadian universities informs his curiosity about the role of education in social mobility.

"I am starting a pilot study on how first-generation, mature, and racialized students experience and navigate the University of Alberta and on whether their knowledge, languages, and prior experience are recognized or set aside in advising and student services," Dr. Sen says.

"From there I want to look more broadly at engagement and retention among these students, at access and transition programs for non-traditional learners, and at how institutional and provincial governance shapes equity outcomes."

Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, a day of reflection and learning to honour the children who never returned home, survivors of residential and day schools, and their families and communities.

In observance of the day, the University of Alberta is closed. We encourage everyone to learn more about the U of A’s ongoing work toward reconciliation through Braiding Past, Present and Future, the U of A Indigenous Strategic Plan.
